Job overview

We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a dynamic Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly team at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM). We also welcome applications from experienced Band 5 therapists who are completing dysphagia competencies.

The post is based at Royal Stoke University Hospital and involves working collaboratively with wider teams across several disciplines on the acute wards. Our goal is to provide an excellent standard of care with patient welfare at the heart of our work.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide Speech and Language Therapy services across the inpatient settings of Royal Stoke and County Hospital. This dynamic post requires managing a varied caseload, including dysphagia and communication disorders, and collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams in addressing care/support issues across various conditions, facilitating safe early discharge and improving health and wellbeing.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Competence in the assessment and management of inpatients with dysphagia across all acute ward areas.
  2. Skilled assessment of communication and implementation and evaluation of care/support packages.
  3. Demonstrate initiative and autonomy while creatively solving problems.
  4. Supervisory responsibilities as required.
  5. Support service development as part of the wider SLT team.

Person specification

Experience

  • Assessment and management of patients with complex communication and swallowing disorders.
  • Experience working within the NHS and hospital settings.
  • Effective teamwork in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Ability to prioritize a clinical caseload safely and delegate appropriately.
  • Experience in instrumental assessment of dysphagia (e.g., VF or FEES).

Qualifications

  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Registration with HCPC.
