Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology / General Medicine, providing expert diabetes patient care at UHNM, serving a catchment population across Staffordshire, Leek Moorlands and North Shropshire. The successful applicants will join the Diabetes, Endocrinology & General (Internal) Medicine team doing a variable split of Diabetes & Endocrinology and General Medicine. We currently run 2 acute general medical wards at Royal Stoke and 1 acute general medical ward at County, where most of the patients with acute metabolic diseases are admitted under the consultant team, supported by junior and middle grade staff. A full range of secondary and tertiary outpatient diabetes & endocrine clinics is delivered at UHNM.

Main duties of the job

  • Each ward has a daily board round followed by a morning consultant ward round.
  • You will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services.
  • You will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.
  • All medical and dental staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with the UHNM Trust’s Health and Safety Policies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provision of cover to your base ward, attendance at daily board rounds and weekly case conferences, as required, on your base ward.
  • Provide cover for an agreed complement of wards for a specialist opinion on patients.
  • Take on-going responsibility for patients under his/her care.
  • Participate in the development of the protocols and guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
  • Take an appropriate share of responsibility for the professional supervision and development of junior doctors within the speciality, to include appraisal.
  • Provide ward based teaching to junior doctors, medical students and physician associates.
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit.
  • Ensure own practice is up-to-date.

Person specification

  • Qualifications: MRCP (UK) or an equivalent Qualification.
  • An enthusiasm, as well as interest, to be involved in medical education.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in General Medicine.
  • A minimum of 12 years medical work since obtaining a primary medical qualification, of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a medical specialty.
