Overview

The post is suitable for an individual with breast surgery experience who is nearing completion of Specialist Registrar training or who is a breast specialist who wishes to gain experience in advanced management of complex breast conditions, benign and malignant, including Oncoplastic surgery. Candidates should therefore have had significant previous training in breast surgery. The post will comprise no emergency duties. It is mainly to cover elective sessions at UHNM and a ten session job with research and audit commitments.

The UHNM Breast Unit is a busy breast surgery unit in the West Midlands, UK and manages the spectrum of benign and malignant breast disorders in close collaboration with colleagues from radiology, oncology, pathology and plastic surgery. Screening assessment cases are managed across North Staffordshire. The Unit sees 700 new breast cancers a year.

Main duties of the job

  1. Diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  2. Support the Consultants to ensure continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge allowing for all proper delegation to and training of staff.
  3. Support the Consultants in the diagnosis and treatment of patients occupying accommodation made available under section 58, 65, and 66 of the National Health Act 1977, in so far as such patients have not made private arrangements for such treatment under section 65(2) of the Act.

About the Directorate

General Surgery at UHNM is sub-specialised into Breast, Vascular Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Lower GI Surgery and Paediatric Surgery. The GI Consultants currently operate a general surgical practice on a 1:12 emergency on call rota, although this rota is presently under review. There is a separate 24/7 Vascular Surgery on call rota.

The Directorate has a reputation for being very busy and committed to providing a comprehensive service. We have an excellent record of training at both Basic and Higher Specialist Training levels. The Directorate has a budget of £25 million and employs approximately 400 staff.

The hospital received its first undergraduate medical students in October 2002 and this has proved to be an excellent opportunity to expand the work of the surgical department.
