Job overview

University Hospitals Dorset is looking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow in Shoulder Surgery. The 12 month fellowship is supervised by Mr Rob Moverley and Mr Senthil Muthian.

We are principally recruiting for fellows to commence in Feb 2027 but may consider applicants for future opportunities if deemed suitable at the point of interview.

Main duties of the job

The post will concentrate on elective Shoulder surgery. The post will allow the surgeon to develop a specialist interest in Shoulder surgery and applicants should have either completed or be about to complete their training in this area. The unit is involved in clinical research into joint replacement and the Fellow will be involved in this. There is no out of hours on call commitment.

Any other changes unrelated to this, will be handled in line with Trust/National terms and conditions.

As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality care across seven days, this post may involve participation in an out-of-hours rota, including evenings, weekends, and/or bank holidays, in accordance with service needs. Any work undertaken outside standard hours/PA’s will attract remuneration in line with the respective NHS Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service .

Person specification

Skills, Knowledge and Aptitude

• Principles and practice of shoulder surgery.
• Ability to manage own workload.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff.
• Evidence of technical competence in intermediate level surgery.
• Understands principles of audit.
• Up to date, complete logbook of experience.
• Meet the requirements of the GMC's Good Medical Practice.
• Audit - Evidence of participation or enthusiasm.
• Some experience of medical writing.
• Contribution to management of professional organisation.

Experience

• Greater than two years orthopaedic registrar level experience including at least 6 months of shoulder surgery
• Minimum 4 months of NHS experience.
• Evidence of involvement in audit & research projects.
• Evidence of participation or enthusiasm of audit.

Interpersonal Skills

• Potential to function successfully under stress and to undertake responsibility.
• Ability to act on own initiative appropriately.

Qualifications and Training

• Basic MBBS or equivalent.
• Postgraduate FRCS / MRCS or equivalent.
• Commitment to continuing postgraduate education and training.
• Ability to organise own learning.

Other

• Full Registration with GMC.
• Understands principles and theory of research/QI, evidence of enthusiasm or participation in research or QI.
• Able to speak English as necessary for the role
