University Hospitals Dorset have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse to work as part of a small team on a newly created day unit at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital site. This unit will provide much-needed day care for Interventional Radiology patients.

Main duties of the job:

  • Provide specialist nursing care to patients undergoing IR procedures.
  • Deliver high standards of quality care and patient experience without direct supervision across the IR day care unit.
  • Practice autonomously and be responsible and accountable for safe, compassionate, person-centred, evidence-based nursing.
  • Take charge of the unit daily, ensuring an efficient and safe flow of patients.
  • Support the Clinical Lead in the leadership, management, and organization of the IR Day Case Unit.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining a suitable learning environment for the ongoing professional development of registered staff.
  • Support the Trust strategy of delivering quality healthcare services for patients and their families.
  • Work within and support the Trust objectives and the ward department philosophy and standards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

  • Support the day-to-day running of the IR Day Case unit, ensuring that patients are well cared for, safe, and that procedure lists run on time and efficiently.
  • Ensure high standards of safety and quality are adhered to on the unit, always putting the patient first.
  • Facilitate high-quality individualized care to patients during their care pathway.
  • Be visible, accessible, and promote nursing professional standards within the unit.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and assist the Clinical Lead in the day-to-day line management of the nursing team.
  • Work collaboratively with the Clinical Lead and others within the team, supporting current service provision and planned expansion of services.
  • Address issues related to staff resourcing or contingency plans to maintain optimal operational services.

Person specification:

  • NMC Registered nurse, educated to diploma or degree level.
  • Teaching and assessing course, Mentorship in practice course, or NMC supervising learners in practice approved.
  • Evidence of a post-registration qualification or approved training course related to surgery or interventional radiology or in leadership and management.
  • Experience in Interventional Radiology (or a similar interventional specialty), surgical ward experience, or working in a day case unit.
  • Leading staff skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate professional knowledge and expertise underpinning transferable general nursing duties.
  • Medication and prescription management (non-IV and IV medication and blood products).
  • Recruitment and Selection skills.
  • Conscious Sedation skills.
  • Skills for accessing databases related to radiology information systems.

Knowledge:

  • Good understanding of peripheral vascular disease, urology, and gastro-intestinal disease.
  • Evidence and awareness of leadership/management skills and experience with implementing change.
  • Continuous staff development.
  • Understanding of Trust Policies and NHS Policies on Quality Improvement projects.
  • Trust Quality Strategies.
  • Awareness of patient experience, quality, and safety agendas that support Governance Frameworks.
  • Involvement in policy and SOP development.
  • Implementation of service development and changes.
