This appointment is for a Consultant Dermatologist and will be based at Royal South Hants Hospital. Some sessions may be in Southampton General Hospital and/or other sites of health care provision. The focus of this post is to provide comprehensive specialist outpatient services in dermatology and may also include services for a subspecialty in medical or surgical dermatology.

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities. Main duties of the job:

  • Attend departmental meetings including departmental and consultant meetings, Clinical Governance meeting and Skin MDT.
  • Support our well-established team.

  • The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Person Specification:

Qualifications, Training & Experience:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. MRCP/MRCS or equivalent
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Good all-round experience in General Dermatology
  • Experience in the management of skin cancer and cutaneous surgery
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
  • Experience of supervising junior doctors

Desirable criteria:

  • Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST or equivalent
  • MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates/postgraduates
  • Experience of teaching Lay groups and other staff groups

Aptitudes and skills:

Essential criteria:

  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty
  • Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on-call rota for the specialty
  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Evidence of Audit/Research
  • Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CCST
  • Supervision of postgraduate trainees
  • Evidence of Clinical Governance
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
  • Ability to organise in-patient and out-patient waiting lists

Desirable criteria:

  • Interest in the field of skin cancer and dermatological surgery or other specific interest in a medical subspecialty of dermatology
  • Familiarity within issues of service organisation and development
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research
  • Publications in peer review journals
