The current vacancy is a permanent Full-time post. It offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic teacher to develop, or start, their career in a lively and innovative setting as part of a dynamic, supportive and collaborative department. The successful applicant will be a strong graduate of a relevant degree course, with a deep passion for History and the ability to convey this effectively to pupils across all age groups.
This is an outstanding opportunity to teach History at a high level in a congenial and stimulating setting. It should, therefore, be attractive to an ECT (UCS offers full statutory induction), or to a serving teacher seeking wider experience. We welcome equally applications from teachers in the maintained sector and the independent sector.
A willingness to contribute to the co-curricular life of the school will be an additional and important recommendation. We expect all of our teachers to be Form Tutors.
The History Department
The History Department works very closely with the Politics Department, sharing a large, modern office and with many teachers teaching both subjects.
History is studied by all pupils up to Year 9 and is a popular optional subject in Years 10 and 11, with around 90 pupils in each year group. Pupils follow the CIE IGCSE International Relations syllabus focusing on the period 1919 - 1989 with a depth study on Germany 1918 - 1945. The subject is equally popular in the Sixth Form. Since September 2022 pupils have been following the AQA History course. There are two papers in this course taught in parallel, Paper 1 on Russian 1855 - 1964 and Paper 2 on Modern Britain 1951 - 2007. Additionally, A Level pupils do coursework, which is on the causes of the American Civil War. From September 2027, pupils will study the Crusades for Paper 1, with coursework on Russia.
Politics is a very popular subject at A Level. We follow the Edexcel Politics course, which focuses on British and American Politics, and have four sets in Year 12 and three in Year 13. Public examination results are excellent, with engaged pupils who create a regular Politics podcast and a termly magazine.
The departments have an excellent track record of preparing applicants successfully for Higher Education and a number of candidates each year apply for History, Politics, HSPS and International Relations to universities in the UK and overseas. The Oxbridge programme consists of weekly seminars led by teachers, as well as offering mock interviews. The departments also support 3-4 pupils a year who are taking an EPQ, and there is a popular History and Politics society, as well as talks offered by external speakers.
