About us
The UCL Cancer Institute brings together over 300 scientists and collaborates closely with UCLH, the Royal Free Hospital, and partners in the Cancer Research UK City of London Centre. It supports both basic and translational cancer research. UCL is part of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) network, enabling early-phase clinical trials of new cancer therapies. The Institute also hosts the NIHR Clinical Research Facility, focused on first-in-human trials, and works with the CRUK/UCL Clinical Trials Centre to strengthen clinical research. The ECMC GCLP Facility develops and validates analytical methods for trials, ensuring compliance with international clinical and laboratory standards.
About the role
This is a pivotal role supporting world-class cancer research through expert safety guidance and leadership. As Safety Advisor, you will:
- Take a key advisory role for laboratory researchers and lead on the implementation and continuous improvement of safety policies and procedures.
- Act as Departmental Safety Officer and Lead Biological Agent Peer Reviewer.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including UCL Safety Services, Estates, and regulatory bodies.
- Support laboratory operations and building management to ensure safe, compliant, and fit-for-purpose facilities.
- Deliver safety inductions and training, co-chair the Institute Safety Committee, and contribute to UCL's Target 100 safety management system.
About you
We are looking for someone with:
- A BSc in a science discipline (preferably Biological) or equivalent experience.
- A relevant Health and Safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH certificate or diploma).
- Experience working to Containment Level 2 standards in a biological research setting.
- Strong knowledge of current Health and Safety legislation, GM regulations, and ideally experience with radioisotopes or X-ray equipment.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and influencing skills.
- A commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and delivering high-quality service.
