Biosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Computational modelling approaches are frequently used alongside experimental research programmes and much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the health of the planet. Activity is underpinned by high calibre science technology platforms and state of the art equipment. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes, an expanding number of Masters Programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Neuroscience, Physiology, and Pharmacology (NPP) as a core funded Technical Professional. The successful candidate will be part of the NPP Core Technical Team, led by a Research Technical Manager and including two Research Technical Officers and a Research Technician.
The post holder will coordinate, monitor and deliver high quality technical management to multiple laboratories and will have a central role in the running of assigned facilities within the department or division. The role focuses on implementing and maintaining high-standard core technical support for research laboratories across NPP, including those within the Centre for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Neuroscience (CCMN), the Medawar Pain and Somatosensory Laboratories, and those working independently. They will facilitate research by taking on Health & Safety responsibilities, managing and troubleshooting specialized equipment, and supporting the setup and optimisation of experimental procedures, including molecular biology, tissue culture techniques, electrophysiology and pharmacology activities.
A key focus is providing technical advice and hands-on assistance to research groups working with rodents, including managing the day-to-day operational requirements of designated Schedule 1 rooms in compliance with Home Office regulations. The post holder will liaise with the Divisional Operations Team and Estates to address both routine and complex building maintenance issues. They will work with the Research Technical Manager to provide input into the design and specifications of small and medium size refurbishment projects, and the facilitation of such works.
About you: You must have at least a BSc/Level 6 in a relevant Biological Sciences subject, or relevant experience, substantial experience in supporting mammalian and insect cell culture within a Containment Level 2 (CL2) environment, and proven experience in the operation and management of laboratory equipment and infrastructure (including user training, maintenance, troubleshooting and lifecycle management), particularly equipment supporting cell culture and associated molecular and cellular biology workflows. Experience in management of Health & Safety in a laboratory environment and in holding significant H&S responsibilities is also desirable. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Show good time management and organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and manage short term problems as well as long term projects and contribute to strategic planning.
