About us

The Faculty of Engineering Sciences comprises ten academic departments which undertake research and teaching across a great range of disciplines. Our scientists and engineers combine discoveries from life and natural sciences, pure mathematics, psychology and many other areas with their own innovations to address global challenges. The UCL Department of Chemical Engineering, the first Chemical Engineering department in the UK and celebrating its Centenary, is routinely recognised as one of the very best in Europe, and among the top 25 departments in the world in the QS World University Subject Rankings. The department has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, from the molecular scale to the scale of large industrial plants, at the heart of which lie chemical transformations by which resources are converted to products such as fuels, commodity and specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, consumer products and advanced materials. Our current awareness of the world’s finite material and energy resources demands that these products are obtained in a sustainable, efficient and environmentally acceptable fashion and that new energy solutions are implemented.

Within this exciting and demanding context, the department develops innovative and impactful technological solutions that leverage advances in basic science addressing Global Grand Challenges in domains such as Advanced Manufacturing; Functional Materials; Health; Energy; Water; CO2 removal; Environment and Sustainability. The department is the home of the Electrochemical Innovation Laboratory (EIL), the Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering (CNIE) and is one of the founding members of the Sargent Centre for Process Systems Engineering. The department is also a partner in the Manufacturing Futures Lab and the Advanced Propulsion Lab at UCL East. The APL operates as a world-class collaborative research lab where research, teaching and industry collaboration come together, bringing expertise from Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, to address propulsion challenges across the full propulsion system.

About the role

The key responsibilities of the role include leading on the development of research in the field of electrochemical engineering with a focus on advanced battery technologies and their manufacturing/metrology, fuel cells and/or electrolysers, alternative propulsion relevant energy storage systems including supercapacitors, and modelling. You will be expected to conduct and publish high-quality world-class research that complements existing departmental and Faculty activities, while securing research grant funding to support your programme. The role also involves developing national and international partnerships with industry, academic institutions, and other relevant organisations to maximise research impact. Additionally, you will support postdoctoral researchers, as well as PhD students, and contribute to the teaching of current or new modules relevant to the post. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in departmental administrative, outreach, and enterprise activities.

The salary for a grade 8 Lecturer is 54,931-62,903 per annum inclusive of London allowance, or 68,284-74,166 per annum inclusive of London allowance for a grade 9 Associate Professor post as per UCL's non-clinical grade structure. This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Academic Staff.

About you

The key skills required for the post are a PhD and an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering or other relevant discipline; an appropriate background and research expertise to make contributions at the forefront of research in chemical engineering with emphasis on the areas of relevance to the post; combined with excellent attention to detail and the ability to build good relationships with students, colleagues and external partners.

Relocation Supplement

UCL currently supports a relocation supplement of up to 10,000 may be payable where it is necessary to relocate from within the UK, and up to 20,000 if from outside of the UK, to take up an appointment at UCL.
