About us

With more than 200 buildings across its diverse estate, UCL offers a challenging and rewarding environment in which to support fire safety compliance and protect its staff, students, visitors and contractors. Reporting to the Fire Safety Manager, you will support the delivery of UCL's fire safety management systems, undertake fire risk assessments, audits and inspections, and provide expert advice on fire safety legislation and best practice. You will contribute to incident investigations, emergency evacuation planning, fire safety training and building projects, working closely with departments, Estates teams, contractors and external agencies.

About the role

Reporting to the Fire Safety Manager, you will support the implementation and delivery of UCL's fire safety management systems, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, recognised standards and best practice. You will undertake fire risk assessments, audits and inspections across the estate, identify non-compliances and work with colleagues to develop practical solutions and manage corrective actions. You will provide specialist fire safety advice to staff, managers and departments, including guidance on Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs), fire prevention and protection measures. You will also contribute to the development and delivery of fire safety training, including training for Fire Evacuation Marshals, and support investigations into fire incidents and unwanted alarm activations. Working closely with Estates colleagues, contractors and external agencies, including the London Fire Brigade, you will help ensure fire safety is effectively integrated into building maintenance and capital projects. You will also contribute to monitoring fire safety performance, maintaining accurate records and reports, reviewing procedures and keeping up to date with changes in legislation and industry guidance. This varied role will involve working across UCL's buildings, campuses and accommodation sites, offering an excellent opportunity to make a tangible contribution to fire safety across a large and complex university estate.

About you

You will be confident undertaking risk assessments, identifying hazards and advising on proportionate, practical and cost-effective solutions. With excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, you will be able to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels, influence positive change and build productive working relationships. You will be equally comfortable working independently with minimal supervision and collaborating as part of a team, managing competing priorities and responding flexibly to operational demands. You will also have good IT skills and the ability to prepare clear reports, maintain accurate records and communicate technical information effectively. A full, valid UK driving licence is essential, as the role requires independent travel between sites. You must also be able to access different areas of the estate, including stairs, roof areas, basements and tunnels, as required.
