About us

The Liver Failure Group at UCL, led by Professor Rajiv Jalan, is internationally recognised for its work on acute‑on‑chronic liver failure (ACLF), systemic inflammation and infection in advanced liver disease. We are seeking a motivated Clinical Research Fellow at ST5/ST6 level to work on the AMBRENCH study, which aims to develop a novel algorithm that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to predict antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The post‑holder will collect clinical data and bacterial isolates, help with sequencing and enter study data, while learning about the microbiome, AMR and AI. The post is part‑time (0.5 FTE) for 9 months, starting in December 2026, and is based at the Royal Free Campus. It is funded through the AMBRENCH study

About the role

The main purpose of the role is to support delivery of the AMBRENCH study. The post‑holder will identify and help recruit eligible patients, collect high‑quality clinical data and samples, and work with the clinical microbiology laboratory to obtain and log bacterial isolates and their antimicrobial susceptibility results.

They will help prepare isolates and samples for sequencing, track samples from collection to result, and enter and quality‑check clinical, microbiological and sequencing data. Working alongside clinicians, laboratory scientists and data scientists, they will help build the dataset used to train and test the AI algorithm, and will have the chance to present and publish from the study.

This role is not suitable for UCL sponsorship.

About you

We are looking for a doctor at RDPS Nodal point 3 equivalent with full GMC registration and a licence to practise, ideally in gastroenterology/hepatology or a related specialty, with experience of caring for patients with cirrhosis or liver failure. You will be organised and accurate with data, communicate well, and be able to work across clinical and laboratory settings.

Previous experience of microbiome science, sequencing or AI is not required: training will be provided. UK GCP certification is needed, or must be completed before starting.
