The UCL estates comprises more than 250 buildings including accommodation. A significant part of developing the estate will be improving its inclusive design, thereby providing an environment which supports equal access and inclusion to UCL and its wider community. In this regard, the estate presents many challenges such as small spaces, narrow doorways, lack of accessible toilets and stepped access between levels, entrances, exits and thresholds, along with a lack of prayer space and quiet contemplation space. The role is a new post in UCL Campus Experience and Infrastructure. The post will provide in-house expertise on all aspects of accessibility and inclusive design in the estates management and facilities services for UCL. The post holder will work closely with partners and colleagues to create and maintain inclusive environments in and around UCL. About the role The primary purpose of this role is to lead a team in developing building work programs and reasonable adjustments for the Campus Experience, Infrastructure, and Estates Development alongside team members. This position will serve as the client-side advocate for accessibility, inclusive design, and estates management, including project delivery and facilities services. The goal is to ensure that design and project processes effectively contribute to creating inclusive environments, while facilities services work to maintain and enhance inclusivity across UCL. It is essential to consistently provide inclusive design advice to colleagues and partners, including consultants, and to proactively embed the principles of inclusive design across all organisational work and deliverables. About you Strong understanding of disability and inclusive design issues. Degree or professional qualification relevant to access and inclusive design and/or an equivalent level or depth of knowledge of inclusive design and accessibility. Being a member of the National Register of Access Consultants, or equivalent. Track record of success in providing comprehensive inclusive design and accessibility advice. Demonstrate experience in finding creative and innovative solutions to embed inclusive design within complex projects. Experience of working effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Experience of working closely with project teams in delivery of a range of construction projects from minor refurbishment to new build and landscaping projects. An understanding of current and devolving policy, practice and guidance regarding inclusive design. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Proactive, self-motivated, committed and enthusiastic. A creative person with a positive approach to finding innovative solutions. A high degree of integrity and ability to operate in a complex environment. Experience of managing a team, including development of team members. Integrity and strong commitment to social justice. Ability to be professional and present a positive impression of UCL’s work externally. Ability to work collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
