If you are an inspirational cancer nurse with a commitment to delivering excellent patient care to Head and Neck and Thyroid Cancer patients, then we would like to hear from you for a substantive Band 7 CNS post at UCLH. At UCLH we are proud of the work we do with cancer patients. The strong links with Macmillan and the Values Based Standards aimed at improving the patient experience help us provide truly holistic care to our patients. We are the specialist surgery centre for patients undergoing major head and neck surgery in north and northeast London. We are a specialist surgical endocrine and head and neck thyroid oncology surgery, radioactive iodine and radiotherapy. In addition to surgery, we have a strong oncology team with an active trial’s portfolio and palliative care. UCLH is one of 2 centres in the UK who are offering Proton Beam Therapy to Head and Neck patients.

You will be part of the Head and Neck and Thyroid Clinical Nurse Specialist team, which is led by the Lead CNS, and comprises Macmillan CNSs, an Enhanced Recovery CNS and a Macmillan Cancer Support Worker. Macmillan Cancer Support has been working closely with UCLH for several years and is committed to delivering world class care for people affected by cancer. We understand their needs and the needs of people affected by cancer and use this insight to shape all aspects of our work. Macmillan professionals will be skilled and motivated in making their contribution to our vision.

Main duties of the job

The head and neck and thyroid cancer clinical nurse specialist will provide holistic care and support to patients and their families affected by head and neck and thyroid cancer. He/she will provide specialist nursing advice and care throughout the patient pathway from suspected cancer and diagnosis, during treatment often multimodality while acting as the patient’s key worker and advocate through their cancer journey. He/she will also be a core member of the multidisciplinary team and be expected to participate in decision making and service development. This is an excellent opportunity for a nurse looking for a new challenge who has core skills of altered airway management, complex wound management, and enteral feeding management. The post holder will require excellent communication skills and a passion for quality patient care, teaching and education.
