Senior Staff Nurse- Teenage & Young Adult Daycare & Ambulatory Care Unit

We are looking for an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join our team in the Teenage and Young Adult Daycare and Ambulatory Care Unit.

You must be a band 6 nurse (paediatric or adult) with at least 2 years of oncology experience. You must also be proficient in chemotherapy administration. You will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in caring for teenagers and young adults with a wide range of oncology and haematology conditions in a day care and ambulatory care setting.

Main duties of the job

The unit is made up of Ambulatory care, Daycare chemotherapy, supportive care and twice weekly sedated intrathecal lists.

The successful candidate will; work across all units assessing patients for and delivery systemic anti-cancer therapy, providing supportive care in both outpatient and ambulatory settings and provide holistic patient centred care.

You will be required to demonstrate experience and skills in this area and have leadership, development and organisation skills to co-ordinate safe efficient delivery of care to this patient group. You will also be required to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of delivering care to this patient group in an age appropriate setting and have a desire to work with teenagers and young adults.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse Part 1, 2 or relevant section of the register
  • Accredited mentorship course or willing to undertake
  • Relevant accredited clinical course (oncology/haematology 30 credits OR equivalent)

Experience

  • At least 2 years\\\’ experience in this specialty
  • Proficient in administration of systemic anti cancer therapies
  • Proficient in advanced IV administration skills or working towards.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates awareness of the importance of working a multidisciplinary team
  • Evidence of experience of managing ward/department in the absence of senior nursing staff
  • Experience of participating in the appraisals of junior members of the team

Communication

  • Communicates effectively verbally, in writing and in electronic formats

Personal and People Development

  • Demonstrates evidence of professional development, maintains updated portfolio
  • Demonstrates evidence of ability to educate others
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of professional boundaries with colleagues, patients and their families, recognising the complexities of caring for teenagers and young adults with cancer

Infection prevention and control

  • Being familiar with, and adhering to Trust policies and guidance on infection prevention and control.
  • Completing all required training and education (both via e-learning and face to face) on infection prevention and control.
  • Including infection prevention and control as an integral part of your continuous personal/professional development and included in your annual appraisal
  • Taking personal responsibility so far as is reasonably practicable, in helping ensure that effective prevention and control of health care associated infections is embedded into everyday practice and applied consistently.
