University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) invites applications for a Consultant in Children and Young People’s Diabetes and Endocrinology.

About the service
The Children and Young People’s Diabetes Service is well established and one of the largest in the UK, using the latest diabetes technologies including hybrid closed‑loop insulin delivery systems. The service provides intensive support for young people managing diabetes and is recognised for its outstanding results.
We value applicants with a holistic, team‑working approach who are driven to work in a high‑performing team and continually improve care. The appointee may have an additional interest that complements current skills within the team, including mental health and eating disorders, safeguarding, neurodevelopment, research and adolescent medicine. There is a possible future on‑call requirement for diabetes. The service provides a busy paediatric and adolescent endocrine service for local residents, those from London and the South East, and tertiary/quaternary adolescent referrals. The service also incorporates endocrine liaison clinics for NHSEngland specialist services for Children and Young People with Gender Incongruence (formerly GIDS).
We expect the appointee to have or develop a subspecialty interest in endocrinology that complements the current department interests and to support the endocrine component of the NHS England specialist services for CYP with Gender Incongruence.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will demonstrate the ability to meet UCLH\’s Trust values, with a can‑do approach to working with colleagues and a patient‑centred mindset. They will exhibit leadership, commit to clinical governance, and ensure high‑quality patient care. The UCLH diabetes team provides consultant‑led care with each family seeing the same consultant at each quarterly MDT review. Each consultant has overall clinical responsibility for their own patient cohort. The post holder will participate in teaching activities on the UCLH site and will be responsible for educational supervision of trainees, including developing skills in postgraduate teaching, training and supervision, and participating in annual appraisals. They will supervise endocrine junior doctors and assist in workload management. They will liaise with the Education and Training lead for Paediatric Endocrinology colleagues at Great Ormond Street Hospital to support a comprehensive teaching programme that fulfils the RCPCH Training Curriculum for Paediatric Endocrinology across the two sites.

We would expect the appointee to have or develop a subspecialty interest in endocrinology that complements the current interests within our department, such as puberty and reproductive endocrinology disorders, pituitary disorders, adrenal disorders, DSD, late effects of cancer treatments, and to support the endocrine component of the NHS England specialist services for CYP with Gender Incongruence (formerly GIDS).

Knowledge and Qualifications
- MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
- Eligible for full GMC registration
- On GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of attainment of CCST/CCT in Paediatrics at date of interview
- Specialist interest in Paediatric Endocrinology
- A higher degree: MSc, MD, PhD or equivalent
- On or eligible for the sub-specialty register for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes
- SPIN paediatric diabetes
Experience
- Competencies equivalent to Highest Specialist Paediatric Training
- Extensive experience in Paediatric Diabetes
- Broad experience in general Paediatric Endocrinology
- Ability to manage all common diabetes emergencies and therapeutic interventions
- Good broad knowledge of general paediatrics and adolescent medicine including developmentally appropriate healthcare
- Knowledge of relevant aspects of respective adult specialties
- Experience working in the NHS
- Special interest in an area of Paediatric Endocrinology and/or Diabetes
- Principles and practice of endocrinology within the gender dysphoria setting
Skills and Abilities
- Evidence of leadership ability and commitment to clinical governance
- Quality improvement/audit project experience in the past three years
- Competent in a range of IT skills
- Experience in a range of teaching techniques
- Track record and understanding of research, knowledge of research ethics
- Formal teaching qualification
- Experience of recruiting patients to clinical research trials
- Publish research in peer‑reviewed journals in relevant areas
