Job Overview

We are delighted to offer this unique opportunity for an Academic Clinical Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to join the Child and Adolescent Psychological Medicine service. This is a 12-month fixed term post from April 2025 – March 2026.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled Academic Clinical Fellow looking to broaden their experience in multidisciplinary medical education alongside clinical work with children and young people within a paediatric acute hospital setting. You will be joining an experienced Child & Adolescent Psychiatry team embedded and fully integrated into the UCLH Children & Young People Division.

In your academic role, you will be deputy to the UCL Medical School Child & Adolescent Mental Health Lead, taking a leadership role in overseeing, managing and helping deliver the Year 5 Medical Student programme. This will include recruiting lecturers to deliver sessions, developing educational materials, delivering lectures/workshops online and in person. You will work alongside the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry team and with 2 Academic Clinical Fellows in Paediatrics within the Division. You will also help to develop and deliver a training programme for Acute Hospital Staff on Children & Young People Mental Health.

Main Duties of the Job

In your clinical role, you will join a vibrant multidisciplinary team to support paediatric liaison work to a highly complex and diverse patient group. The Child and Adolescent Psychological Medicine/Services provides assessments, consultation and interventions for patients being treated at UCLH with medical conditions and experiencing emotional, psychological, behavioural difficulties or mental illness. This includes children and young people presenting in mental health/psychosocial crisis to the Emergency Department, as well as patients receiving treatment as in-patients or out-patients under one of the UCLH teams within the Children & Young People Division.

You will provide Child & Adolescent Psychiatry input to the Paediatric Emergency Department; T12 South Adolescent (13-18yrs) ward; T11 South (<13yrs) paediatric ward; and to T11 & T12 North wards, providing Child & Adolescent Psychiatry input to the UCLH Paediatric Oncology service and the Teenage & Young Adult Cancer Service, as part of the Psych-Oncology team.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

• Full GMC Registration.
• CT/ST 1-3 or relevant experience in psychiatry.
• MRCPsych or equivalent.
• Section 12 approval.
• Training the trainers educational training or equivalent.
• CT/ST 3+ with experience in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

Experience

• Experience in CAMHS, paediatrics or general adult psychiatry.
• Experience of teaching medical students and multi-disciplinary teams.
• At least 3 years full time work or equivalent training in a recognised psychiatry and/or paediatric training scheme.
• Experience of leading and/or managing teaching programme.

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to work effectively as a team member.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to prioritise and organise clinical and supporting activities.
• Good clinical knowledge and excellent clinical skills, including psychopharmacology, risk assessment and management.
• Experience in a range of teaching techniques.
• Competent in a range of IT skills, including use of Teams, Zoom, Excel, Word.
• Experience in simulation training and learning.
• Evidence of leadership ability and commitment to clinical governance.
• Range of Quality Improvement/audit projects in the past three years.
• Postgraduate teaching degree or diploma.
• Completion of simulation training (faculty development program).
• Research experience.
