We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Senior Research Midwife to join the Women’s Health Research Team at UCLH. We welcome applications from Research Midwives passionate about improving screening pathways and maternity outcomes. This post will play a central role in delivering the ACES study, a pilot implementation project assessing the feasibility and acceptability of introducing cytomegalovirus (CMV) screening into routine antenatal pathways at UCLH.

CMV is one of the most common congenital infections worldwide, and the ACES study will combine a retrospective serosurvey with a prospective offer of screening to 1,000 pregnant women. The study aims to generate essential data on screening uptake, clinical pathways, diagnostic performance, acceptability to women and staff, and the practicalities of embedding CMV screening into NHS antenatal care. Findings from ACES will directly inform future national policy and help shape safe, evidence-based maternity services. This is a 12-month fixed-term post. Due to the requirements of the role, the post holder will be expected to work a five-day week and will not be eligible for condensed hours.

Responsibilities

  • For 50% of their time the post holder will lead the operational delivery of the ACES study at UCLH, working closely with the Chief Investigators, Consultant Virologist, Research Fellows, clinical teams, and partner organisations.
  • Key responsibilities include coordinating participant recruitment, supporting informed consent, scheduling and facilitating study visits, ensuring accurate and timely data entry, and overseeing sample collection, processing, and results management.
  • Maintain close liaison with the Fetal Medicine and Virology teams to support clinical management pathways.
  • Contribute to qualitative study components (such as participant surveys and interviews).
  • Support follow-up of women with recent primary CMV infection in line with clinical protocols.
  • Work with neonatal services for postpartum assessments.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and support to junior members of the research team.

The remaining 50% of the role will involve supporting the broader reproductive health research portfolio and undertaking line management responsibilities for junior members of the team.
