12‑month Clinical Research Fellow in Acute Medicine – beginning August 2026 and based in the Acute Medical Unit at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Role Overview

This fellowship is designed for doctors in training who wish to develop skills in clinical informatics, data science and research while maintaining registrar‑level clinical practice. The role is split roughly 50/50 between research and acute medical care.

Responsibilities

  • Spend half the time on supervised research: developing applications for externally‑funded projects, generating pilot data, contributing to established studies, recruiting to portfolio studies, collecting and analysing clinical data, and developing research skills in methodology, biostatistics and systematic review.
  • Support academic publications and funding applications.
  • Spend the other half on registrar‑level clinical duties in the Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care and the Enhanced Care Unit: assess and manage acutely unwell medical patients, provide senior decision‑making support to junior doctors, supervise resident staff, participate in the acute medical take, and deputise for the Duty Medical Registrar during rota gaps.

Qualifications & Eligibility

  • Doctors in training in any medical specialty with a general internal medicine component.
  • Full GMC registration eligibility.
  • Post‑IMT2 (or equivalent) and competent to work at ST3 and above.
  • UK‑based trainees should seek prospective approval for an Out of Programme Experience from their Training Programme Director.
  • No prior data science research experience required – clinical knowledge and a willingness to learn will be sufficient.
