About the role

In your role as Business Manager - Risk, Compliance & Funding, you will make a meaningful and valued contribution from the outset. This role will provide a great opportunity to provide strategic and operational support to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) in fulfilling their responsibilities as Head of Group Risk, Compliance and Funding. The role will work collaboratively across key risk teams, including Enterprise and Operational Risk, Information Security, Compliance, Financial Risk and Funding & Valuation - to ensure effective delivery of risk management objectives, enhance governance, and strengthen the overall effectiveness of delivery of the risk framework across the Group.

What you will be doing

  • CRO Support
  • Support the USS CRO in all aspects of their role including running a department of c60 people across both USS and USSIM.
  • Work effectively alongside the CRO's EA to manage the CRO's incoming requests and actions.
  • Track the governance forums that the CRO’s team needs to engage with.
  • Liaise with relevant team members/SMEs to ensure that they are aware of, and meeting, relevant deadlines.
  • Review papers from the CRO’s function to ensure high quality and compliance with internal requirements.
  • Assist the CRO by leading specific initiatives as required.
  • Represent the CRO on various internal management committees and forums.
  • Support the CRO in considering exec succession for their team in conjunction with HR.
  • Support the CRO with external engagements they are attending on behalf of USS.
  • Support the CRO in creation, completion and evidencing of departmental objectives.
  • Management of the RRAC (Remuneration Risk-Adjustment and Accountability Committee).
  • Finance support
    • Work closely with Finance Business Partner to coordinate the business planning process.
    • Organize CRO departmental reviews and support strategic planning.
    • Coordinate definition of strategic priorities and KPIs.
  • Risk team infrastructure
    • Work with the HR team and CRO to develop the people strategy for the CRO’s function.
    • Identify areas for continued process improvement and enhance efficiencies.
    • Enhance MI reporting from each of the teams within the CRO function.
    • Assist in the preparation and analysis of internal team risks registers and self-assessments.
    • Work closely with each of the Heads of relevant teams to ensure consistent prioritisation and approach to key initiatives.
  • Support CRO in their management of their function
    • Support on leadership development for CRO team.
    • Ensure appropriate communication and cascade of key messages and team priorities.
    • Review and update team management processes.
    • Ensure clear leadership processes are in place across the function.
