About the role
In your role as Analyst – Global Emerging Markets, you will make a meaningful and valued contribution from the outset. This role will provide a great opportunity to generate high-quality company and industry research and analysis.
- Analysis – as an experienced analyst, the candidate will be a producer of high-quality investment research for the Global Emerging Markets (GEMs) team’s investment decisions. The research role will be focused on countries and industries relevant to the mandates being managed by the GEMs team.
- Investment Platform – the candidate will contribute to the evolution of the GEMs investment platform. They will help develop the team’s investment approach and investment tools that will facilitate a common language of discussion. This will include, but not be limited to, idea generation (including sustainability), analysis (including modelling & ESG), valuation techniques (including DCF and historic multiples), thesis capture and monitoring (including engagement and voting).
- Team – collective responsibility is key to the successful functioning of the GEMs team with each member expected to provide support to each other and where necessary, provide training and mentoring to less experienced team members thereby enhancing the reputation of USSIM Equities both internally and externally.
What you will be doing
- Identify investment opportunities which align with the GEMs investment philosophy.
- Provide rigorous, fundamental research for each investment candidate to understand the business model, assess the company’s prospects and evaluate how the company is being valued by the market.
- Take ownership of allocated investment candidates and holdings, ensuring up-to-date knowledge and awareness of key material investment considerations (including ESG) which will be significant over the investment horizon of USS.
- Document research (including engagement) and recommendations in line with the requirements set out in the Equities Documentation Requirements.
- Continually evaluate the validity of the initial investment hypotheses in light of real-world evidence.
- Seek continuous improvement in the investment platform across all dimensions to deliver on the team’s objectives.
Relationship and Communication Responsibilities
- Collaborate with other analysts within equities but also across the wider group to include RI, PMG and Credit.
- Hold regular meetings with the Heads of GEMs regarding the mandate, the evolution of their investment ideas and improvements to the investment research process and team development and efficiency.
- Hold regular meetings with GEMs colleagues on their investment ideas, improvements to their investment process and areas for individual development.
- Engage with the Responsible Investment team to ensure appropriate measures and integration of ESG issues as part of their investment assessments.
- Communicate with sell side analysts, industry experts, consumers, and suppliers to support investment analysis.
- Lead meetings with company management in an appropriate manner, maintaining and upholding USSIM’s reputation.
Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery: In the event of a BC/DR incident the Analyst should inform their manager as soon as possible of their whereabouts and follow the instructions given to them.

Qualifications
- Degree level education – Desirable.
- Professional qualifications (working towards CFA or equivalent) – Desirable.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
- Programming capability (Python or equivalent) – Desirable.
- Graphical presentation capability – PowerPoint or equivalent.
- Familiarity with Bloomberg – Desirable.
General skills and experience
- Experience in financial markets.
- Strong analytical ability.
- Regional specific experience (North Asia) – desirable.
- Strong understanding of valuation techniques and fundamental analysis.
- Good understanding of corporate governance, public equity markets and Responsible Investment.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to represent USS externally in a professional manner.
