The opportunity Unity Studio is our industry focused, cutting-edge, browser-based real-time 3D authoring tool. Studio's next chapter takes it into gaming, with an ambitious vision for how real-time 3D experiences are created, shared, and played on the web.

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Unity Studio team, you will own the cloud services behind the product: real-time multi-user collaboration, build and publishing pipelines, and the platform APIs the editor is built on. You will join a fast-moving, cross-functional team where your work ships quickly and directly shapes the product.

You will collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and product managers from day one. As a senior member of the team, you will help set the technical direction, raise the engineering bar, and mentor others as the team grows.

What you'll be doing

  • Design, build, and operate the backend services behind real-time collaborative editing, game publishing, and content delivery
  • Own systems end-to-end - from design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and running them in production
  • Evolve how the platform scales - stateful real-time workloads, session routing, and service fleets in a cloud-native environment
  • Define the APIs and service contracts that the editor and partner teams build against
  • Strengthen our infrastructure and delivery practices - infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and automated deployment
  • Work closely with product and design to turn ambiguous problems into shipped, reliable features
  • Champion reliability and observability, and help the team respond to and learn from production issues
  • Mentor other engineers and raise quality across the team through code review and design feedback

What we're looking for

  • Substantial professional experience designing, building, and operating backend services in production
  • Strong proficiency in one or more modern backend languages, and the flexibility to work across several
  • Solid grounding in distributed systems - API design, data persistence, state management, and the trade-offs between them
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms and containerized, orchestrated deployments
  • A track record of owning services in production, including monitoring, debugging, and incident response
  • Pragmatism and comfort with ambiguity - you ship iteratively and make sensible trade-offs under real deadlines
  • Clear communication and easy collaboration with both technical and non-technical colleagues

You might also have

  • Experience with real-time or multiplayer systems - WebSockets, collaborative editing, or state synchronization
  • Experience with the Unity Engine or other interactive 3D technology
  • Experience building backend services for games or interactive media
