Description:

What will you be doing?

Providing one to one friendship to a young carer. Befriending a young carer is a unique opportunity to do something different and allows a volunteer to give their time in a more dedicated way to a matched young carer. They help to provide social opportunities, support and a safe adult the young carer can talk to. This can look like taking their young carer for a drink and a chat, going for a walk or on an outing related to their young carer's interests. The meetings are flexible, either weekly, biweekly or monthly depending on what works for both the volunteer and young person.

Befrienders are fully trained and have full guidance and support through the process. We ask new volunteer befrienders to join us for a few youth clubs first so we can all get to know each other, allowing RYC to better match the befriender with a young carer. Befrienders need to be kind, caring, good listeners and have a good sense of humour! Ideally you will have experience working with young people or mentoring in some form. Befrienders are matched with a young carer who they then meet with 1:2:1. This is supervised by RYC. You will need to be happy driving the young person on befriending outings. Befrienders must also keep in touch with the RYC befriending supervisor.
