A branch volunteer helps customers to get the most out of their local library and makes a positive difference in people’s lives. This customer-facing role plays an important part in supporting access to Hampshire’s Library Services and is a great way of giving something back to your local community.

As a Library volunteer you will become a valued member of the team, helping customers to get the most out of their local library and making a positive difference in people’s lives. You will be involved in a wide variety of tasks and activities which may include:

  • Welcoming and interacting with the public to ensure all visitors have the best possible service.
  • Assisting customers to collect reserved items, access the online catalogue, and use the self-issue and return facilities, referring complex queries to staff.
  • Assisting customers to log on to the public IT terminals and access the programs available, referring complex needs to staff.
  • Passing customer enquiries that require access to staff systems such as Spydus and the PN booking system to library staff to resolve.
  • Assisting with the packing and un-packing of deliveries, shelving returned items, and keeping the library tidy and in good order.
  • Maintaining displays of leaflets and notices supplied by staff so they are kept tidy and up-to-date.
  • Working within Hampshire County Council’s health and safety guidelines and supporting the implementation of evacuation.
  • Assisting with events and promotions such as story or rhymetime sessions or learning in libraries.
