United Healthcare Global is seeking a motivated and growth‑minded Occupational Hygiene Technician to join our team at the Shell Bacton Gas Plant
This role offers an exceptional development pathway for individuals who are newly qualified or currently working toward their Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene (CertOH) and aspire to progress into a fully trained Occupational Hygienist role. The Company will provide comprehensive training and mentorship to support development in this position.
The Occupational Hygiene Technician will be embedded within the HSE UK Team, reporting operationally to the Gas Terminal Leadership Team (LT) and functionally to the UK Health Manager.
Role description
- Partner with Occupational Hygienists, Safety Advisors, and operational teams to deliver an integrated, risk‑based approach to occupational hygiene management
- Serve as the site's Occupational Hygiene Focal Point, providing guidance on areas such as COSHH, asbestos, noise, vibration, manual handling, and other workplace health risks
- Recommend and help implement effective control measures and verification checks for health hazards
- Lead on the implementation, review, and continuous improvement of the site's Health Risk Assessment (HRA)
- Conduct worker exposure monitoring, analyse and communicate results and implement outcomes
- Maintain accurate, auditable records of monitoring, exposure outcomes, and health surveillance inputs
- Perform assurance checks on occupational hygiene processes to ensure compliance and operational robustness
- Coordinate and track actions arising from internal or external audits to ensure timely, high‑quality closure
- Deliver awareness sessions and toolbox talks on occupational health risks and good practice
- Drive proactive health‑risk management through targeted campaigns and workplace engagement initiatives
- Help the plant leadership to ensure compliance with legislation, Shell SEAM Standards, and company health procedures
Additional Duties
- Support the environmental specialist by carrying out routine compliance monitoring including waste management, spill preparedness and checking of bunds
- Support the plant leadership as the site focal point for the observation card system and tracking of actions, recognition and trending
- Support the plant leadership team with frontline assurance, health checks and tracking of actions
Required professional qualities and experience:
- Demonstrated understanding of occupational hygiene principles across diverse industrial environments
- Working knowledge of the UK regulatory framework (e.g., COSHH, asbestos, noise, manual handling)
- Collaborative, reliable, proactive and able to meet demanding deadlines
- Adaptable and comfortable working within a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment
- Written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex concepts
- Competent user of Microsoft Office and related digital tools
Required Competencies and Qualifications
- Newly qualified or working towards an Occupational Hygiene Degree or Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene (CertOH) is preferred OR
- NEBOSH National General Certificate (NGC)
- A background in science, engineering, safety, or another relevant technical discipline is preferred
- The candidate will either hold or be willing to work towards relevant Industrial Hygiene BOHS/OHTA qualifications such as M200, M501, M505, M507 etc
