Are you ready to take a pivotal role in shaping the future of our wastewater network? As a Network Project Engineer, you’ll be the technical focal point for capital investment across your geographical area—making sure our network is resilient, reliable and ready for the demands of the future. In this role, you’ll take the lead in developing and delivering local and regional programmes, working closely within our IAP and IBP forums to guide investment decisions. Once plans are approved, you’ll drive delivery of all Very Small Projects (VSPs) and provide technical expertise on escalated reactive work, ensuring everything meets our TCQI expectations, asset standards and health & safety obligations.
From data analysis and design through to preparing documentation, drawings and specifications, you’ll support projects from initial concept right through to delivery and handover. You’ll also be a trusted technical partner to both our Infrastructure and Non‑Infrastructure delivery teams, offering day-to-day contractual, commercial and engineering support.
Role Accountabilities
- Support the County Performance Team in assessing needs submitted through the problem note process, considering all factors including cost, customer impact, MOS/ODI performance, health & safety, and overall feasibility.
- Help ensure all corporate systems are fit for purpose by keeping data accurate, reliable, complete and up to date.
- Work closely with the County Performance Team and internal partners – including Commercial, Framework Contractors, A&A, Developer Services and other specialist providers – to identify the right technical solution and delivery route.
- Liaise with the Customer Communications team to arrange customer appointments for surveys, work, inspections and final checks, and support the analyst in keeping all corporate systems updated.
- Carry out duties required under CDM Regulations, acting as Designer and/or Principal Designer where appropriate.
- Produce all relevant project documentation, including pre‑site meeting notes, PCI packs and handover information, ensuring the project can be costed accurately.
- Co‑ordinate S159 notices with landowners/occupiers to gain access to private land where required.
- Review and agree draft O&M manuals, Health & Safety files and as‑built drawings with Field and Maintenance teams, providing feedback and archiving documents while ensuring the needs of UUW Commercial and Wastewater Network Operations are met.
- Ensure daily compliance with all Wastewater Network policies, procedures, strategies, Environment Agency protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Provide day‑to‑day technical, contractual and commercial support to both Infrastructure and Non‑Infrastructure delivery teams and assist the Commercial Team in resolving escalated or complex contractual/commercial issues.
- Build strong working relationships with internal teams, framework contractors and Alliance Partners to identify synergies, share best practice and support any training needs across stakeholders.
- Resolve issues, queries and customer complaints relating to planned short‑ and long‑cycle capital investment on the Wastewater Network.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Degree or HNC in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or relevant network experience.
- Extensive knowledge and experience of the sewer network and maintenance techniques.
- Basic understanding and experience of the principles of pumping station operation.
- Basic understanding of the legal issues relating to sewerage law and its practical implementation.
- Basic knowledge of Health and Safety standards, including CDM Regulations and NRSWA.
- Basic understanding of Water Industry Specification and UUW Asset Standard.
- Ability to use computer systems for reporting, e.g. myrisk, JIRA, onemap.
- Proven ability to accurately estimate project costs.
- Capable of planning and controlling resources to meet standards of service.
- Ability to make quick decisions when under pressure.
- Budget management skills/experience.
- Ability to supervise contractor activities where necessary.
- Strong customer focus and experience of dealing with customers.
