Overview
As Engineering Design Manager you lead in-house multidisciplinary design teams to deliver safe, high-quality designs for major capital programmes.
You will shape design strategies, coordinate interfaces with stakeholders, and drive standardisation and digital design practices.
The role focuses on delivering value, innovation and continuous improvement across the engineering function, contributing to the North West’s water infrastructure.
You will work closely with programme leadership to ensure timely, compliant delivery and handover.

Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams across a diverse project portfolio
- Develop and deliver design strategies for major capital investments
- Plan and prioritise design workloads with optimal resource use
- Provide leadership, coaching and line management to design professionals
- Champion engineering excellence, standardisation and digital design practices
- Lead design reviews, identify and escalate risks
- Act as technical interface between design teams, stakeholders and programme leadership
- Manage design budgets and contribute to business cases and investment proposals
- Drive innovation through modern engineering approaches and improved design processes
- Ensure compliance with technical, regulatory, safety and quality requirements throughout the design lifecycle
- Act as CDM Principal Designer and embed health, safety and wellbeing into design practices
- Key requirements
- Significant post-graduate engineering experience
- Professional qualification or equivalent industry-recognised accreditation
- Proven experience leading design delivery within complex environments
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing technical interfaces
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities
- Experience managing project schedules, resources, design risks and budgets
- Strong commercial awareness and cost management in design delivery
- Track record of problem solving in project environments
- Experience driving innovation, digital transformation and continuous improvement
- Understanding of health, safety and regulatory obligations including CDM
