About us
An exciting opportunity for two Senior Civil Engineer's (Water) in the Water Services, Water Quality Maintenance Team here at United Utilities.
The Water Quality Maintenance Team run a cyclic program of Outages, Inspections and Capital Maintenance work, at our Service Reservoirs, Contact Tanks and other Potable water tanks, right across the United Utilities Operational area in the North West from Carlisle to Oswestry on the Welsh boarders.
Working within a Team of Project managers, Project Engineering Managers and Service Reservoir Program Controllers, the Senior Engineer Water (Civil) role will deliver multiple aspects of work, such as Engineering inspections, Scope writing, Managing delivery of capital work, acting as PCW (Person in Control of Works) and Design.
With over 600 individual Water storage tanks across United Utilities, the successful candidate will be working closely with Water Network, Water Process and Aqueduct Operational teams, and many of our contract partners specialising in this field.

The role
Our successful candidates will provide Engineering support including design and technical engineering advice to all areas of Water Operations at UU.
You will operate within the delivery area of the Water Quality Maintenance Team and work closely and maintain strong relationships with other disciplines and internal clients.
You will be responsible for Inspection, Reporting and Management of agreed maintenance programs in your designated area and sites including management of contractors. Supporting and developing technical outputs within Water Quality Maintenance Team required to fulfil our delivery goals.
Key accountabilities
- Working closely and maintaining strong relationships with other disciplines and internal clients (e.g. DM’s, PEM’s and Operational roles), demonstrated via feedback.
- Responsible for the delivery of a range of projects and providing technical engineering advice throughout UU, including data gathering and analysis, design, preparation of documents, drawings, calculations and specifications, review of proposals by others and providing advice and responses to other team members. The main area of responsibility is likely to be the capital programme, operational support and studies & investigations. Responsible for the technical delivery of projects within budget and programme to all internal clients
- Deputise for Project Manager Construction (Water) when requested
- Raise the profile of UU technical leadership in the water industry and other sectors by submission of technical papers or assistance to STEM activities.
- Organising and managing commission orders when required.
- Development & improvement of UU’s Engineering standards and procedures
- Ensuring all activities in accordance with Health and Safety Legislation and Accepted Practice, and ensuring all training and processes are adhered to. Act as the Designer in accordance with CDM
- To undertake all activities in accordance with an appropriate Quality Management System e.g. checked and verified calculations, drawings, specifications, and owner of specific United Utilities’ Company Standards
- To maintain and develop their own engineering expertise and mentor and supervise developing engineers from across the business.
Skills & experience
- Chartered professional engineer or equivalent level of expertise, demonstrating personal and professional management attributes and qualities commensurate with professional Chartership Status. This will include demonstrating leadership skills including, coaching, interpersonal communication, empowerment, and motivation consistent with UU leadership behaviours
- Strong technical competence and leadership with an ability to influence technical solutions across the whole of UU with an awareness of process and construction risks analysis techniques
- Experience in leading successful multi-disciplinary teams in highly technical and commercial environments and delivering capital and strategic projects and providing operational support in the water industry or other sectors.
- Experience gained by delivering projects across the complete project lifecycle from needs to concept and feasibility through to detailed design, technical assurance, testing & commissioning and final handover.
- Excellent understanding of UK and International technical policy, strategy, standards etc.
- The post holder must have good knowledge of water and hydraulic design, together with a detailed knowledge and experience of company standards, procedures and technologies and have knowledge of the operational environments, operator skill levels and operating cost implications of the proposed Engineering solutions. A working knowledge is required of the interfaces with other disciplines.
- The post holder will also be able to communicate, to both technical and non-technical audiences, concepts and ideas regarding the application of particular designs with experience in presenting technical papers
- The post holder will demonstrate a personal commitment and encourage commitment in others to safety in all aspects of work.
- The post holder will be required to work on their own and as a member of a team.
Other
Travel across the all of Untied Utilities Operational area within North West is required, therefore a full Driving licence is required.
