We have an exciting opportunity for a Regulatory Controller Trade Effluent to join United Utilities in Rochdale covering the Greater Manchester area. This role plays a vital part in protecting our wastewater network and the environment by controlling and monitoring trade effluent discharges into our sewers and treatment works.

You will be part of a friendly, professional, and highly motivated Trade Effluent team, working closely with a fellow Regulatory Controller in Rochdale and the wider team based in Davyhulme & Bury. Managing a dedicated portfolio of non-household customers, primarily across Manchester city centre, you will take ownership of ensuring compliance while building strong, trusted relationships with retailers and stakeholders.

This is a varied and dynamic role with a balanced mix of office and field-based work, with around half your time spent on the road carrying out site visits using a provided electric van. You will need to be organised, proactive, and confident in managing your own workload, balancing planned activities with reactive work, while always supported by a knowledgeable and collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Liaise with retailers on behalf of non-household customers using the JIRA case management system to manage trade effluent queries, applications, and sample notifications in line with agreed service levels.
  • Carry out sampling and meter readings in line with planned schedules, applying Trade Effluent Policy procedures to ensure effective control through robust consent conditions.
  • Monitor discharge data and conduct on-site testing to ensure compliance with consent standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Gather and present evidence to support enforcement action where non-compliance has impacted or could impact United Utilities, its assets, or the environment.
  • Provide out of hours support to manage incidents relating to trade effluent discharges and ensure timely resolution.
Skills and Experience
  • Strong understanding of trade effluent regulations and environmental legislation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, with experience using systems such as JIRA, TEMS, WALTO, OMS, and Access.
  • Experience working within a health and safety focused environment, including the use of specialist equipment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with both internal teams and customers.
  • Ability to work independently with a proactive mindset, managing your time efficiently and prioritising a mix of planned and reactive tasks.
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage your own portfolio of customers.
  • Willingness to participate in the Trade Effluent standby rota.
Essential Qualifications
  • HNC or BSc or equivalent in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline.
  • Full and valid driving licence.
