Job Purpose

To lead and deliver H&S subject matter expertise to support and challenge delivery of best‐in‐class H&S performance in UU activities across Greater Manchester. Work with County operational leadership to support the delivery and embedment of the H&S improvement plans, and the embedment of processes and procedures to ensure employees get home safe and well. Identify and escalate critical H&S issues to County Leadership for appropriate support and intervention. Work with the Operations H&S Manager to develop H&S plans that deliver County Improvements in line with the wider UU H&S strategy. Coach and mentor relevant H&S advisors.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Regular participation in County Leadership team meetings and field visits to support County leadership in the delivery of H&S policies, procedures, standards and improvement plans.
  • Conduct proactive health & safety inspections within the County and report findings and trends back to County Leadership.
  • Build an effective working relationship with field teams and county leadership to communicate operational dilemmas and implementation challenges.
  • Review and analyse County health, safety and wellbeing data to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Track completion of the H&S improvement plans in their business areas and escalate concerns to County Business Leadership.
  • Provide advice as required on UU health and safety requirements.
  • Complete H&S incident investigations through to root cause and close‐out.
  • Engage with field teams and County Leadership to ensure learning from significant H&S incidents are shared, including delivery of engaging H&S messages at roadshows and team briefs.
  • Coach and mentor H&S advisors in effective support and challenge.
  • Provide support as required cross‐county and/or into UU wide improvement programmes, and on the development and improvement of the H&S management systems and processes.

Technical Skills & Experience

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 Qualification in Health & Safety (Essential).
  • Chartered Member of IOSH or actively working towards (Desirable).
  • Proven track record of delivering sustained health, safety and wellbeing improvement.
  • Demonstrable experience of influencing, coaching and negotiation skills with key stakeholders.
  • Excellent investigation and root cause analysis skills.
  • Good understanding of H&S behavioural theory and practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of effective communication with key stakeholders.
  • Experience of communicating and presenting to senior management, both internally and externally.
  • Experience of managing own professional development and coaching/mentoring others.

Qualifications

  • Essential: NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 Qualification in Health & Safety.
  • Desirable: Chartered Member of IOSH or actively working towards.
