The Laboratory is highly automated and uses a combination of simple and complex techniques to provide an analytical service carried out in accordance with quality operating procedures. The analytical service meets the requirements of the ISO 17025 – General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories and is also United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited.

The Scientist is a scientific and technically competent individual who is adept in all aspects of the work undertaken with some specialist skills as well as working as part of a team, supporting efficient workflow and reporting of results. The role operates within a laboratory production environment and requires a flexible approach to working hours including some cover for weekend/Bank holidays and emergency standby/call out.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Direct Production activities in a laboratory environment
  • Preparation and analysis of Potable and Wastewater, and Trade Effluent samples for Organic contaminants using chromatography and mass spectroscopy techniques including HPLC, GC-FID, GC-MS and LCMSMS.
  • Attain competency under a continuing professional development process
  • Undertake investigation of anomalous results under analytical quality control procedures
  • Support implementation of new equipment/improved techniques from own team.
  • Support ongoing workloads and projects within Scientific Services
  • Best practice integration and continuous improvement
  • Initiate equipment maintenance and repair

Essential communication, influencing and interpersonal skills within team

  • IT and LIMS skills
  • Understanding of Health and Safety.
  • Financial awareness

Technical Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Scientifically adept with recent practical laboratory skills - across a variety of techniques
  • Good understanding of ISO 17025, ISO 5667 and all other related regulatory requirements
  • Essential communication, influencing and interpersonal skills
  • Troubleshooting, problem solving and workload planning
  • NVQ/QCF Level 3 or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline in line with entry to Membership of a relevant scientific professional body such as the Royal Society of Chemistry

This role requires weekend working and emergency standby cover on a rota basis once training is sufficient.
