Safety And Occupational Health Specialist (Fire Safety Officer)

You will serve as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist (Fire Safety Officer) reporting to the Supervisory Safety and Occupational Health Manager of the Environmental Safety and Health Department (ESH) of MID ATLANTIC REGIONAL MAINTENANCE CTR (MARMC) located in Norfolk, VA.

Duties:

• You will serve as the technical expert in specialized areas related to occupational safety and health issues for MARMC.
• You will be responsible for managing all assigned Occupational Safety and Health Programs and ensure compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Act.
• You will provide recommendations to management relative to projected safety and occupational health laws and requirements.
• You will conduct unplanned event/mishap investigations on shipboard fire-related incidents and complete a detailed report for the Safety Manager.

Requirements:

• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level.
• Applicants must meet the Department of Defense (DoD) certification requirements.
• Candidates for firefighter positions must not have reached their 37th birthday by date of appointment.
• You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.
• You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
• This is a Mission Essential position.
• You will be required to climb ladders and scaffolding.

Qualifications:

• Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
• Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
• Experience implementing and overseeing assigned safety and health programs with minimal supervision.
• Experience reviewing submitted plans for compliance with safety, health, fire protection, and environmental requirements.
• Experience developing and delivering course material to promote safety awareness throughout the facility.
• Experience conducting independent accident/incident investigations to determine contributing factors.
• Experience collecting and analyzing safety trends and metrics to highlight areas requiring additional oversight.
• Experience with shipboard damage control, fire safety principles, and firefighting practices.
• Experience with regulations and standards from Navy, NAVSEA, CNRMC, NFPA, and FEMA National Incident Management System.
• Experience utilizing OPNAV Instructions and NAVSEA Technical Manuals related to fire safety and OSHA.
