About the Role: We are looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Senior Developer to join the company and play a key role in developing, maintaining and modernising our Brightlime CRM platform and wider technical estate. This is a hands-on role focused on PHP, MySQL and robust API development, spanning both legacy systems and modern platform components. You will help build new features, maintain existing applications, design and support RESTful APIs, integrate third-party services and ensure reliable data exchange across our website, external partners and core business systems.

Working closely with the Lead Development Architect and development team, you will analyse and improve legacy codebases, introduce automated testing, troubleshoot complex production issues and support the gradual modernisation of our technology stack. You will also have the opportunity to use AI-powered development tools, including Claude Code, to improve code quality, accelerate delivery and support innovation across the platform.

Experience & Skills Required:

  • Expert-level PHP and MySQL development experience, with a strong track record of building, maintaining and improving production systems.
  • Experience working with legacy codebases and older technologies, with the ability to understand, maintain, refactor and modernise existing systems safely.
  • Strong experience designing, building and consuming APIs, including RESTful APIs, authentication, webhooks, request validation and error handling.
  • Confident integrating third-party services such as payment gateways, email platforms, marketing tools and CRM or membership management systems.
  • Strong SQL skills, including query optimisation, database performance tuning and maintaining data integrity across distributed or multi-tenant environments.
  • Experience introducing or extending automated test coverage, including testing legacy systems before refactoring key business logic.
  • Working knowledge of Docker, cloud-hosted environments such as AWS, EPoS systems and membership platforms would be beneficial.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and the confidence to contribute to code reviews, technical discussions and continuous improvement.
  • Experience using AI-powered development tools, or a willingness to adopt them, to improve productivity, code quality and development efficiency.

Schedule: We operate a 7-days a week business, your required working pattern may include weekends and bank holidays. This is a hybrid role with travel to all clubs as per the requirements of the business.
