Staff Software Engineer - BPL

Join us as an experienced Staff Software Engineer in our London‑based Payments Acquiring business, where you will lead technical delivery and help shape development standards.

Purpose of the role

Design, develop, and improve software across the platform using industry‑standard languages, frameworks, and tools to deliver business value.

Accountabilities

• Develop and deliver high‑quality software solutions; ensure code is scalable, maintainable, and performant.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to define requirements and align solutions with business objectives.
• Participate in code reviews, promote code quality, and share knowledge.
• Stay current with technology trends and contribute to technical excellence.
• Follow secure coding practices and mitigate vulnerabilities.
• Implement unit testing practices to maintain code reliability.

Qualifications

• Deep expertise in backend engineering and building large‑scale distributed systems in a cloud environment (AWS preferred, Azure or GCP acceptable).
• Expertise in Java or Kotlin, Scala, or similar JVM language.
• Data layer expertise: SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis) databases, with understanding of appropriate use cases.

Highly valued skills

• Experience with AI technologies or machine learning integration.
• Background in fintech, payments, scaling tech, or startup domains.
• Rust – systems programming and performance‑critical services.
• Kubernetes – container orchestration, Helm, and cloud‑native deployment strategies.
• React – modern frontend development with TypeScript and state‑management libraries.
• Observability – monitoring, logging, and tracing tools.
• CI/CD – automated deployment pipelines, infrastructure‑as‑code, GitOps practices.
• Messaging & Events – Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, NATS, and event‑driven architectures.
• API Design – RESTful or GraphQL APIs that scale.

Location & Working Patterns

Based in London at 1 Churchill Place or 7 Westferry Circus. Hybrid working with approximately 3 days per week in the office. On‑call rota may require weekend or evening work on occasion.
