We’re hiring a Backend Engineer to join our Account Discovery team—the primary gateway into Wise. This team powers the dashboard customers see when they first log in, turning account activity into clear, fast, reliable summaries and delivering contextual, personalised recommendations.

What you’ll build:

  • Backend services that generate near real‑time account overviews (recent actions, balances, key events) that are easy to understand and trust.
  • Recommendation and discovery capabilities that are personalised, context‑aware, and measurable.
  • APIs and supporting systems that make the dashboard fast, consistent, and available across devices and regions.

You will build the backend behind Wise’s first‑screen experience, developing high‑scale, low‑latency services that stay fast under heavy traffic. Balance real‑time freshness with rock‑solid correctness, and deliver personalisation at scale that’s genuinely useful. You’ll also tackle distributed systems complexity (resilience, failures, retries, idempotency), enable experimentation and measurement (A/B testing, instrumentation), and engineer with security, privacy, and compliance baked in from day one.

Qualifications:

  • Software development experience, preferably using Java.
  • Strong product mindset and passion for customer experience; prioritise work with the customers in mind and make data‑driven decisions to fix customer pain‑points.
  • Great communication skills and ability to articulate complex, technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.
  • Experience working with relational and non‑relational databases, query optimisation and designing schemas.
  • Enjoy writing clean and testable code.
  • Believe in and follow best coding practices, code reviews and open feedback.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and distributed and concurrent systems.

Benefits:

  • RSUs in a growing company.
  • An annual self‑development budget.
  • Statutory maternity leave, with 18 fully paid weeks of parental leave for birth or adoption.
  • Paternity leave for 18 weeks at full pay.
  • Three fully paid “me days” per year to help you manage life.
  • Relocation and visa expenses covered.
  • A paid six‑week sabbatical leave after four years.
