The role involves owning the backend systems the company runs on and the architecture other engineers build on. These systems are critical for correctness, reliability, and scale, as they handle real people's money, homes, and legal exposure.
This is a senior-to-staff hire. At the senior level, you will own systems others build on, make architectural decisions, set patterns, and raise the bar around you. At the staff level, you will own the technical direction of a domain, decide what gets built and how, unblock other engineers, and be accountable for system behaviour under load.
What you'll work on:
- Money movement: Rent, deposits, and payouts through pooled client-money accounts with idempotent processing and split-settlement.
- Reconciliation & bookings: A penny-accurate, self-healing ledger reconciling bank activity across thousands of tenancies.
- Event-driven consistency: Services coordinating over Pub/Sub with sagas across offer contract tenancy payment.
- AI harnesses in production: Deploying agentic AI into operational settings with necessary guardrails, observability, and correctness.
Our stack: We build on NestJS + TypeScript on GCP / GKE, with MongoDB, Redis, and GCP Pub/Sub. You don't need to arrive fluent in it; we hire strong backend engineers who have built production systems with any robust framework (Java/Spring Boot, Go, Kotlin, C#/.NET, Python, or Ruby on Rails) and can ramp into TypeScript quickly.
How we build: Small, well-factored services with TDD and DDD as defaults. Trunk-based CI/CD allows you to ship to production and own it, with tests, observability, and clean rollbacks.
What we're looking for:
- 6+ years building and operating production backend systems (more for staff).
- Fluency in at least one backend language and framework, with the ability to reason about system design.
- Real distributed-systems experience: eventual consistency, idempotency, concurrency, and their failure modes at production scale.
- Strong API and data modelling skills, plus cloud/containerised deployment experience (GCP or AWS, Docker, Kubernetes).
- AI-Native engineer: proficient in using AI across all layers of work and understanding LLM failure modes.
Nice to have:
- Experience with MongoDB and GCP/GKE.
- Familiarity with event-driven architecture and message brokers (Pub/Sub, Kafka).
- Knowledge of payments, ledgers, reconciliation, or financial-correctness domains.
- Experience in fintech or regulated, high-trust environments.
Who does well here: You are precise about correctness, own the outcome, make the next engineer faster, and seek hard problems while raising the standard around you.
Why apply: The company is the AI-Native operating company built for the home, aiming to autonomously run rental properties end-to-end. The backend is technically challenging, dealing with messy operational realities and high throughput across many user types. We've raised a $4m pre-seed from investors who understand the potential of this infrastructure. You'll receive competitive base pay, meaningful equity, and be part of a small, high-agency team rebuilding an industry and growing rapidly.
