We're looking for a skilled Cloud Engineer with experience in Cloud technologies to collaborate with our Data Platforms Engineering team on advancing our Enterprise Data Lakehouse platform. If you're passionate about developing scalable data solutions and automating infrastructure, this role is for you.

We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best. At Nationwide, we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK-wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected. For this job, you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part-time, you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at our London office.

In this role, you'll work in the Data Platforms Engineering team, utilising cutting-edge Cloud technology within Microsoft Azure to enhance our Enterprise Data Lakehouse platform. Using tools such as Databricks, Python, and Terraform, you'll design and develop key platform functionality and data analytics solutions. Expect a hands-on experience where you'll contribute significantly to our daily operations, making a tangible impact with your expertise.

Your responsibilities will encompass building robust code to underpin our platforms and implementing ETL processes to streamline data movement. Crucially, you'll be tasked with optimising data pipelines to enhance the performance of reporting tools and dashboards. Automation will be a key focus, as you'll leverage your expertise to automate routine data processes, reducing manual effort and enhancing overall efficiency. Ensuring data security and compliance standards are upheld is paramount, guaranteeing that data is handled securely and in alignment with relevant regulations. You'll also be responsible for maintaining comprehensive documentation across all development efforts, facilitating knowledge transfer, making the onboarding process easier for new team members.

As a minimum you will have:

  • Proficiency in DevOps principles and tools for continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) to ensure efficient code and deployment management
  • Proficiency in Terraform for infrastructure as code (IaC) to support data platform development
  • Expertise in Python programming for data manipulation, automation, and tool development
  • Understanding of modern development practices – Agile
  • Experience in functional and non-functional testing
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, including setting up and optimising data infrastructure
  • Familiarity with modern data engineering stack tools, including Databricks, for building and managing data pipelines
  • Previous success in designing and implementing ETL processes using industry best practices
  • Ability to automate routine data processes using scripting and automation tools to enhance efficiency and reduce manual effort
