The company is hiring a backend/infrastructure engineer to strengthen the systems behind our product, improve release reliability, and support our next stage of growth. You’ll bring deeper backend, infrastructure, and DevOps experience to a team of product-minded generalist engineers. This is a London based, in-office role. This is a high ownership role in a small, fast-moving team. You’ll work across backend services, deployment infrastructure, release processes, and observability. You’ll build and maintain the services and tooling that power the company.com, our SDK, and how we ship.

We care about craft and momentum. We’re looking for someone who can pick up a problem, drive it end-to-end, and raise the bar for how we build and operate our systems. We’re looking for strong judgment and pragmatism, not rigid process.

You will:

  • Own and improve backend systems supporting the company.com, our SDK, and related infrastructure
  • Improve release safety and speed (versioning, testing, rollbacks)
  • Build and scale backend services, APIs, data flows, and systems that power the company.com
  • Investigate and resolve production incidents and infrastructure issues
  • Partner with product engineers across the stack, and document what you build so the team can move faster

You’ll need:

  • Fluency with TypeScript, Node.js, and systems design
  • Ability to write production-quality code independently (without AI assistance during our interview process)
  • Strong hands-on experience building and operating production backend systems
  • Experience with infrastructure, CI/CD, monitoring/alerting, and incident response
  • Track record improving reliability, developer experience, or release quality
  • Clear communication, strong judgment in ambiguity, and comfort helping other engineers level up on backend/infrastructure

It’s a plus if you:

  • Have been an early or founding engineer at a startup
  • Have experience with developer tools, SDKs, real-time collaboration, or local-first software
  • Have used Cloudflare, real-time databases, or similar backends for collaborative applications
  • Have built infrastructure for products serving both end-users and developer customers
  • Contribute to open source or developer communities

What you’ll get:

  • Competitive salary + equity options
  • Hybrid working model
  • 25 paid days holiday + UK public holidays
  • Private health insurance + pension contribution
  • Excellent equipment and choice of tools

About you:

You care about reliability, craft, and momentum. You like making systems understandable and easy to build on, and you’re comfortable spanning backend, infrastructure, and product when it helps the team ship. You can go deep when needed, stay pragmatic under ambiguity, and help others learn especially around backend architecture, release processes, and operational trade-offs.

We’re best known for the company.com, our free collaborative whiteboard used by millions, and for viral demos like Computer and Make Real.
