An exciting opportunity for a Research Software Engineer. This post is part of an AHRC project, Convergent screen technologies and performance in realtime (CoSTAR). The post will operate within the CoSTAR National Lab led by Royal Holloway University of London with Pinewood Studios, BT, Abertay University, Disguise, National Film and Television School and Surrey County Council.

Responsibilities:

  • Taking a significant role in planning, coordinating and implementing research programmes and, where appropriate, commercial and consultancy activities.
  • Taking lead responsibility for a small research project or identified parts of a large project.
  • Making decisions about research programmes and methodologies, often in collaboration with colleagues, and to resolve the problems of meeting research objectives and deadlines.
  • Leading and collaborating with the CoSTAR team, partner universities and industry across joint research, development and integration to develop new tools and technologies.
  • Developing new concepts and ideas to extend intellectual understanding.
  • Assessing, interpreting, and evaluating the outcomes of research and developing ideas for the application of research outcomes.
  • Pursuing and advocating responsible and open research and innovation to ensure ethical, fair, and inclusive advances in science, technology and use of data.

About you:

The ideal candidate must have a Master's degree in computer science, electronic engineering, or a related subject. A strong background in software development and experience in one or more of the following areas is essential:

  • Experience in software development in topics such as computer vision, audio signal processing, machine learning, deep learning, and/or sensor systems.
  • Experience in collaboration and technology transfer to partners outside of academia, ideally within the creative industries.
  • Excellent writing and communication for varying levels of technical/non-technical audience.
  • Skills and experience of development using languages such as Python and C++ with relevant computer vision, signal processing, machine learning and/or deep learning tools (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, OpenCV etc.).

Desirable skills:

  • Skills and experience of frontend development using languages such as HTML5, Javascript, React.
  • A track record of publishing academic papers, open-source software tools and/or datasets.
