Back-end Engineer Senior in Bracknell

Xe is a cross-border payments platform. We help SMEs and consumers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand collect, convert, hold, and send money across markets. Each year, over 300 million people use Xe for currency information and over 350,000 use us to send money overseas. Today, we’re rebuilding the platform layer behind cross-border payments for corporate and consumer clients.

We’re hiring a senior back-end engineer who owns real problems end-to-end and shapes how the team builds, from API design and data modeling through to service implementation, production reliability, and launch. You already use AI as part of how you think, build, test, and ship. You’ll write code that moves money in production, design and modernize the backend services the platform runs on, and lead delivery of new capability as Xe rebuilds its platform layer. You’ll work in a small team with direct access to product, compliance, and operations, own architecture in your domain, lead design reviews, mentor mid-level engineers, and partner with architects and team leads on cross-domain decisions.

What You’ll Do

• Design and own backend services that move money and manage multi-currency balances across a range of domains, including onboarding, KYC and KYB, payment initiation, FX, settlement, and other supporting services.
• Lead cross‑functional delivery with product, compliance, and operations from problem framing through launch.
• Lead the build of the partner integrations and settlement infrastructure your domain depends on.
• Own production health for your domain, including reliability, observability, on‑call, and incident response.
• Lead design reviews, set technical direction for your domain, and mentor mid-level engineers.
• Use agentic coding tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or equivalent) daily across the SDLC, and lead modernization from legacy services into the modern stack alongside architects and team leads in your domain.

What We’re Looking For

Must-have

• 6 to 10+ years building production backend services, end‑to‑end.
• Strong backend proficiency in C# / .NET preferred; other OOP languages welcome (Java, Kotlin, Go, or equivalent).
• SQL and relational database fundamentals.
• Writing and maintaining tests.
• Daily use of agentic coding tools (Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or equivalent) across the SDLC.
• Production experience with AWS, including hands‑on deployment, CI/CD pipelines and modern deployment practices, and native services such as SQS, DynamoDB, S3, ECS, and Lambda.
• Strong system design and architecture experience, including service‑oriented or microservices and event‑driven patterns.
• Payments, FX, or regulated‑industry experience.
• Track record of technical leadership: mentoring engineers, leading design reviews, and making architecture decisions in your domain.
• Strong written and verbal communication.

Nice‑to‑have

• Experience with ledgers, double‑entry accounting, or other financial‑data systems.
• Experience hiring, interviewing, or onboarding engineers.
• Experience leading modernization or platform migrations.
• Experience with caching solutions like Memcached or Redis.
• Experience using project management and documentation tools like Jira and Confluence.
• Knowledge of API testing tools such as Postman or Bruno.
• Writing automated tests alongside development with AI tools (Claude Code or equivalent).
