Senior Electrical Design Engineer role leads electrical design of water and wastewater treatment assets across full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through construction support and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Electrical Design & Delivery
    • Lead electrical design activities for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
    • Produce and review electrical designs, calculations, specifications, schedules, drawings.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, legislation, client specifications, health & safety.
    • Develop cost-effective, safe, reliable electrical solutions through optioneering and value engineering.
    • Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, handover phases.
  • Power, Control & Instrumentation
    • Design and specify LV power distribution systems, MCCs, switchgear, UPS, standby generation.
    • Develop earthing, lightning protection, cable sizing designs.
    • Interface with ICA engineers on control systems, instrumentation, telemetry requirements.
    • Review supplier and contractor technical submissions FAT/SAT documentation.
  • Project & Stakeholder Interface
    • Collaborate closely with mechanical, civil, process, ICA disciplines to deliver integrated designs.
    • Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, operations teams.
    • Participate in design reviews, HAZID/HAZOP, constructability reviews, risk assessments.
  • Mentorship & Quality Assurance
    • Mentor and support graduate and intermediate electrical engineers.
    • Review and approve designs produced by others.
    • Contribute to continuous improvement of standards, templates, best practices.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Essential
    • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering.
    • Significant experience in the water or wastewater sector.
    • Strong understanding of electrical systems used in water treatment and pumping applications.
    • Experience delivering designs from concept through to construction and commissioning.
    • Knowledge of relevant standards e.g. BS 7671, BS EN, IEC, WIMES, client standards.
  • Desirable
    • Experience working on regulated water frameworks.
    • Site experience including commissioning and fault finding.
    • Knowledge of functional safety and hazardous area design where applicable.
    • Familiarity with NEC or similar engineering contracts.

Technical Skills

  • LV power system design and protection coordination.
  • MCC and control panel specification.
  • Earthing and lightning protection design.
  • Electrical load schedules and cable calculations.
  • 2D/3D CAD tools.
  • Design risk assessments and CDM compliance.
