Senior Electrical Design Engineer role leads electrical design of water and wastewater treatment assets across full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through construction support and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Electrical Design & Delivery
- Lead electrical design activities for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
- Produce and review electrical designs, calculations, specifications, schedules, drawings.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards, legislation, client specifications, health & safety.
- Develop cost-effective, safe, reliable electrical solutions through optioneering and value engineering.
- Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, handover phases.
- Power, Control & Instrumentation
- Design and specify LV power distribution systems, MCCs, switchgear, UPS, standby generation.
- Develop earthing, lightning protection, cable sizing designs.
- Interface with ICA engineers on control systems, instrumentation, telemetry requirements.
- Review supplier and contractor technical submissions FAT/SAT documentation.
- Project & Stakeholder Interface
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, civil, process, ICA disciplines to deliver integrated designs.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, operations teams.
- Participate in design reviews, HAZID/HAZOP, constructability reviews, risk assessments.
- Mentorship & Quality Assurance
- Mentor and support graduate and intermediate electrical engineers.
- Review and approve designs produced by others.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of standards, templates, best practices.
Qualifications & Experience
- Essential
- Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering.
- Significant experience in the water or wastewater sector.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems used in water treatment and pumping applications.
- Experience delivering designs from concept through to construction and commissioning.
- Knowledge of relevant standards e.g. BS 7671, BS EN, IEC, WIMES, client standards.
- Desirable
- Experience working on regulated water frameworks.
- Site experience including commissioning and fault finding.
- Knowledge of functional safety and hazardous area design where applicable.
- Familiarity with NEC or similar engineering contracts.
Technical Skills
- LV power system design and protection coordination.
- MCC and control panel specification.
- Earthing and lightning protection design.
- Electrical load schedules and cable calculations.
- 2D/3D CAD tools.
- Design risk assessments and CDM compliance.
