As the UK transitions towards a low‐carbon energy system under the Government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, resilient and flexible electricity infrastructure is critical. United Infrastructure supports this transition by delivering fully integrated power infrastructure solutions across transmission and distribution networks. As an Independent Connection Provider (ICP), we deliver end-to-end design, construction, and maintenance of electrical networks up to 400kV.

What are we looking for:

As part of our services, the Power Transmission & Distribution (UIPT&D) services are seeking an Environmental Adviser to support the environmental controls and mitigations in the delivery of a significant project to our client. Based in Alness, Scotland, the project to construct and install energy transmission infrastructure covers approximately 80km of the Scottish Highlands between Loch Buidhe to Beauly. The successful candidate will encounter and support the environmental protection and sustainability of almost every species of Scottish flora and fauna to be found across the project landscape, forests and waterways.

About the role:

Reporting to the Environmental Lead, the role forms part of the Health, Safety, Environmental, Sustainability and Quality (HSESQ) team in providing technical support and practical guidance to the project teams. The role provides an opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the project with consideration of the environmental controls, mitigations and responsibilities in line with the legal, company, client and other stakeholder’s requirements and responsibilities. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their knowledge, skills and experience within the role and will be supported in their development to achieve career growth within the project team and wider UIPT&D HSESQ team as opportunities present themselves across the UK.

Operating and administrating from the main site office in Alness, the role spends most of their time at the project worksites monitoring and advising the worksite activities and working with other environmental technical contractors to ensure the minimal impact to the environment is always at the forefront of our operations.

Other responsibilities of the role include:

  • Support the implementation of UIPT&G’s environmental strategy and approach to environmental management including the implementation of UIPT&D’s environmental standards.
  • Provide technical support to facilitate the Contract Environmental Management Plan to ensure that environmental aspects are appropriately identified and managed and that UIPT&G’s HSSE policy obligations are enacted.
  • Assist in the identification, understanding and communication of the legal, industry and contractual environmental obligations placed on UIPT&D and its contractors.
  • Assist in the development and provision of training on key environmental aspects to facilitate greater environmental awareness across the business.
  • Work with assurance teams in developing and undertaking environmental inspections and audits as required.
  • Work closely with environmental technical (Ecology and Archaeology) contractors assigned to the project.
  • Provide support on a broad range of environmental management issues e.g. Peat Management, Water Management, Species protection and other Environmental constraints.
  • Provision of technical environmental advice and support to project management and workforce to ensure that environmental obligations are effectively supported as per the Contract Environmental Management Plan.
  • Assist in the reporting and investigation of environmental incidents and subsequent monitoring to ensure any trends are identified and mitigated effectively.
  • Liaise with the Environmental Lead regarding activities at the worksite and the environmental controls, issues, alerts etc.

Qualifications:

  • Be suitably qualified in a relevant environmentally based discipline (Degree or equivalent) (desirable).
  • Be experienced in a similar role on construction projects of a similar type and scale (desirable).
  • Have a minimum of 3 years as an Environmental Clerk of Works (ECoW) or Environmental Adviser.
  • Professional membership of environmental body (desirable).
  • An ability to collate and interpret environmental performance data.
  • Practical environmental monitoring skills.
  • Authoring environmental management processes & procedures.
  • Conversant with UK/Scottish consenting and environmental legislation.
  • Undertaking environmental awareness training.
  • Environmental inspection and auditing.
  • Driving licence.
  • Excellent communication & literacy skills.
  • Proficient in all aspects of MS Office.
