Our team of highly skilled and hardworking specialists deliver innovative solutions to the complex challenges our clients face.
We are looking for an Apprentice to join our Energy business who design, build, and maintain critical national infrastructure on behalf of UK energy transmission and distribution network owners. You will join our welding apprenticeship programme, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills at college, in our workshop and out on site on our live projects.
Some of your key responsibilities will include:
- Manually weld tubes and pipes to high standards of quality and integrity using a Manual Metal Arc (MMA) and a minimum of one other manual arc welding processes from Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), Plasma Arc Welding (PAW), Metal Inert Gas (MIG)/Metal Active Gas (MAG) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW).
- Continually monitor and adapt to achieve the quality of work demanded by high integrity piping systems, necessitating significant manual dexterity and coordination.
- Working to detailed engineering specifications necessary to ensure safe & reliable operation of the finished pipe work system.
- Interacting with a wide range of people and organisations including Supervisors, Engineers, Pipe Fitters, Stores Operatives, Welding Inspectors, Non-Destructive Technicians, Quality personnel.
- Having your work regularly assessed to ensure continued quality of welding through visual inspection, non-destructive testing and pre-commissioning pressure testing (hydraulic or pneumatic testing).
- Responsibility for the safety, quality, productivity and accuracy of your own work whilst ensuring it conforms to a relevant pipe welding specification.
- Working autonomously during your planning and production activities to being an integrated part of a wider team working on the overall pipework system, reporting to a workplace supervisor.
- Cleaning and taking care of company tools and equipment.
As an Apprentice with United Infrastructure, you’ll be given a real job from day one where you will gain hands-on industry experience and the knowledge required to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. In order to fully develop in your role, you will be enrolled onto the Level 3 Pipe Welder Apprenticeship qualification with our training partner Riverside College. During the first year on your programme you will attend college full time at the Riverside and Cronton campuses, and will spend some of the holiday periods on site at our Golborne office. At the end of your first academic year, you will begin working in the workshop or on site full-time and will then attend college one day per week to continue your studies. You will be fully supported through a variety of methods such as classroom taught sessions, learning materials, and one-to-one support from your tutor or coach.
Academic Entry Requirements
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have achieved, or be predicted to achieve by Summer 2026:
- 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4/A*-C or equivalent including Maths, English and a Science based subject.
- Good level of physical fitness, including the ability to lift, work at heights and outdoors in all weather.
- Good IT skills and able to use basic Microsoft Office packages e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel etc.
- Good organisation, time management and communication skills.
- Full UK driving licence, or be actively working towards achieving this.
- Our project sites can be based all over the UK, so you will need to be able to travel and work away from home when not attending college full-time.
You must also be available to start full-time work by September 2026 and have:

Please note, as this is an apprenticeship programme, in order to be eligible to apply you must not already have an equivalent level or higher qualification in the occupational area, or significant work experience.

- Level 3 Pipe Welder Apprenticeship.
- Eligible for membership of the Welding Institute for Engineering Technician.
