This role involves running a rapidly expanding workshop that welds and fabricates various pipework and bespoke fabrications to meet our in-house and customers’ needs. As a skilled workshop manager, you will be a time-served welder/fabricator, having significant experience in heavy general welding and fabrication and capable of using standard workshop machinery and equipment. Reporting to the Business Standards Manager, this role will require a high level of autonomy and reliability.
- Your team will initially consist of sixteen welding apprentices deployed within the workshop and across sites.
- Practical training of apprentices in multiple welding processes and fabrication techniques.
- Ability to MIG/MAG/TIG/FCAW/MMA weld is essential, as well as an ability to use a range of workshop equipment.
- Able to train apprentices in MIG/MAG/TIG/FCAW/MMA and support their development as welders, interacting with the college, and providing pastoral care (holiday approvals, sickness, etc.).
- First-hand knowledge of welding automation would be desirable.
- Manage a variety of fabrication jobs from start to finish, working to a high standard both individually and as the leader of a team.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, weld procedures, plans and instructions.
- A strong leader who communicates professionally with other team members, customers, suppliers, contractors, etc.
- Ability to work accurately under pressure (to meet deadlines etc.), demonstrating a logical and methodical approach to workloads.
- Familiar with and confident to organise pressure testing and NDT.
- Ordering materials and monitoring stock levels of materials, maintaining accurate stock records and updating the stock control system when necessary.
- Identifying materials and checking quantities and identification numbers against Material Take-off Lists (MTO’s).
- Take responsibility for the inspection and maintenance of specific equipment.
- Overseeing health & safety within the workshop and maintaining a safe working environment, including RAMS and temporary works and perimetry requirements.
- Liaising with the quality and engineering departments to ensure all relevant welding or quality issues are addressed.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years’ work experience as a fabrication foreman/manager or an individual with 10+ years of welding & fabrication experience looking for their next step up.
- Must be computer literate and proficient using Microsoft Office.
- Responsible, conscientious, punctual, highly organised, self-motivated and able to work under pressure, both on own initiative and as part of a busy team.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
