Overview

In this role you will provide senior forensic psychology leadership within the Youth Custody Service at HMYOI Wetherby. You will work within a trauma‑informed, evidence‑based framework to assess risk, deliver complex interventions, and supervise trainee psychologists. You will collaborate with cross‑agency partners and contribute to staff well‑being, risk management, and service development. This senior position combines clinical work, line management, and strategic input across England and Wales YCS and the wider HMPPS Psychology Services Group.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex risk assessments and risk management for high‑risk or vulnerable offenders
  • Deliver and supervise complex programmes (e.g., healthy sex programme) and group sessions
  • Provide professional opinions to multi‑functional teams on sentences, risk, and parole
  • Supervise and mentor trainee psychologists and other staff; coordinate supervision for trainees
  • Develop and implement specialist strategies (e.g., sexual offending or indeterminate sentence intervention)
  • Provide consultancy to SMT and other stakeholders on psychology outcomes and service development
  • Act as professional witness in parole board hearings and other formal settings
  • Conduct relevant research and contribute to offender management processes (ACCT, self‑harm, personality disorders)
  • Ensure HCPC registration and maintain CPD; lead on staff training and development
  • Visit sites and advise on complex cases; share expertise across the wider custodial estate
  • Lead on accreditation audits and ensure policy and procedure compliance
  • Manage own CPD and demonstrate professional standards

Key requirements

  • Two years post‑registration experience (or minimum 18 months with awaiting registration)
  • HCPC registered as a psychologist
  • Professional background in Psychology; clinical supervision experience
  • Chartered Psychologist and/or Full member of BPS (likely)
  • Experience in supervising trainees and coordinating supervision
  • Ability to work non‑operationally with line management responsibilities
  • Strong risk assessment expertise and experience with complex cases
