Home Office Digital designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles and property. An Infrastructure Engineer in Shared Application Support (SAS) Digital Support designs, builds, supports, and improves IT infrastructure across cloud and on-premises environments. The role ensures government services remain secure, resilient, and compliant with government standards.

Your work directly supports critical public services used by millions of citizens. You'll help ensure government systems remain secure, reliable, and available when people need them most.

An Infrastructure Engineer supports and maintains infrastructure solutions and services as directed and according to departmental policy and Home Office strategy. You will work in a team of Infrastructure Engineers making sure services are delivered and supported as required. You work with and support third parties to provide infrastructure services and with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations.

Key responsibilities

• Building, configuring, transitioning, administering and supporting infrastructure technologies and solutions such as: compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, cloud, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open-source packages and solutions.
• Resolving technical problems, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements.
• Taking accountability for actions taken and decisions made.
• Identifying the correct procedures and appropriate channels for resolution and monitor resolution activities and progress updates to users.
• Investigating faults in systems, processes and services, and advise on the implementation of appropriate solutions and preventative measures.
• Working collaboratively to ensure that a set of IT products, suppliers and vendors come together to deliver an IT service using logical designs created by technical architects and required standards, methods and tools (including prototyping tools where appropriate) to build infrastructure solutions.

Like many organisations we need to maintain our services 24/7, therefore, on occasions there may be a requirement to work out of hours, for which you will be paid an additional allowance in line with Home Office policy.

Working Pattern

This role is available on a full-time basis with the option of compressed hours working. This role is also suitable for part-time working hours, with a minimum requirement to work 3 days / 22.2 hours per week due to business requirements.

Essential Criteria

You’ll have a demonstrable passion for Infrastructure Engineering, with the following skills or some experience in:

• Demonstrable experience delivering IT services, support, or technical solutions in a professional environment, with the ability to apply relevant knowledge and skills effectively.
• A good understanding of ITIL v4 guidelines and the ability to articulate and implement them in an IT support role.
• Strong understanding of core technical concepts related to your role and ability to build solutions.
• Dissecting a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing problem resolution.
