In this Lead Engineer role, you will balance hands-on software delivery with technical leadership in a large, modern cloud environment. You’ll guide multidisciplinary engineering teams and shape technical strategy to support the 600+ Home Office applications. The role emphasizes delivering high-quality services while growing the engineering capability across the organisation. Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day activities of engineers, ensuring productivity and addressing impediments
  • Coach and support CPD and formal qualifications within the team
  • Direct engineering delivery while blending leadership with hands-on work when needed
  • Drive appropriate methods and champion new tools/technologies
  • Maintain engineering health and address skill gaps in collaboration with Principal Engineers
  • Engage with stakeholders to understand needs and support delivery on behalf of the team
  • Plan with senior stakeholders to keep product delivery and maintenance on solid footing
  • Collaborate across engineering functions with Architects and other roles

Key requirements

  • Managing multiple delivery-focused teams with competing priorities while adhering to standards
  • Providing operational support to the portfolio to meet ministerial and legislative deadlines
  • Technical knowledge across cloud management, FinOps, and CI/CD
  • Creating and executing detailed roadmaps with quality management and capacity planning
  • Interpreting complex system designs and communicating them to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Mentoring colleagues to develop skills aligned to strategy and goals
