UKAS is seeking Clinical Consultants across Medical Laboratory disciplines in either Immunology, Haematology, Virology, Cellular Pathology, or Medical Microbiology to join our team of Independent Contracted Assessors. This role is designed for consultants who bring strong clinical and diagnostic expertise and can contribute to ISO 15189:2022 assessments of laboratories across the UK.

This is a flexible, self‐employed position designed to be undertaken alongside your existing clinical employment, allowing you to use your specialist knowledge to support high‐quality, reliable laboratory services.

As a Contracted Assessor, you will evaluate the technical competence of medical laboratories and POCT services. Your responsibilities will typically include:

  • Observing discipline‐specific examinations and tests.
  • Reviewing examination records, reports and laboratory procedures.
  • Assessing staff competency and compliance with recognised standards.
  • Reviewing documentation and records including competency files, EQA/IQC processes, method validation and verification, and other discipline‐specific quality system evidence.

Disciplines We Are Recruiting For:

  • Immunology: Specialist care experience in immunodeficiency, autoimmune and allergic disease. Significant experience in clinical immunology services and/or laboratory reporting. Competence in techniques such as immunoassay, ELISA/EIA, multiplex assays, flow cytometry, electrophoresis.
  • Haematology / Blood Transfusion: Experience in clinical haematology, coagulation and/or transfusion medicine. Competence in automated and manual haematology, coagulation testing and blood transfusion processes.
  • Virology: Experience delivering clinical virology services. Competence in molecular virology, and/or electron microscopy, analyser‐based testing, sequencing and associated advisory functions.
  • Cellular Pathology: Experience in histopathology and/or cytopathology. Competence in tissue preparation, staining, IHC, microscopy, reporting and (where relevant) digital pathology.
  • Medical Microbiology (including Mycology & Parasitology): Experience in clinical microbiology service delivery. Competence in culture, organism identification, immunoassay, microscopy, and/or POCT and advisory interpretation.

General Requirements Across All Disciplines:

  • Strong understanding of diagnostic pathways and laboratory processes.
  • Familiarity with IQC/EQA and quality management systems.
  • Awareness of ISO 15189/2022.
  • Full assessor‐process training is provided.
  • Experience in internal/external auditing (desirable).
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Registration with relevant professional bodies (e.g. GMC, HCPC) – desirable.

Contract Details:

  • Independent Contractor / Self‐Employed arrangement.
  • Work is flexible and can be undertaken alongside a full‐time clinical role.
  • Assessments may include remote document review and on‐site visits.
  • UKAS provides full training in assessment processes.
