About UKAS
UKAS is the UK’s National Accreditation Body, responsible for assessing organisations that provide conformity assessment services. We help maintain trust across industries by confirming that assessment bodies apply standards correctly, consistently and impartially.
The Role
We are looking for experienced occupational health and safety professionals to join our network of independent Technical Assessors, supporting UKAS assessments of Certification Bodies operating against ISO 45001:2018. This role is centered on conformity assessment, not consultancy or direct health and safety management. You will help evaluate whether Certification Bodies have the competence, audit approach and sector knowledge needed to certify organisations within relevant OH&S management system scopes. The work may cover sectors such as construction, manufacturing, engineering, agriculture, food production, utilities, transport, healthcare, education, public administration, services and SSIP-related schemes.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Assess Certification Bodies and audit teams delivering ISO 45001 certification activities.
- Review audit evidence, competence records, certification decisions and technical documentation.
- Evaluate whether auditors demonstrate appropriate competence in workplace hazards, OH&S risks, risk controls and applicable legal requirements relevant to the sectors they audit.
- Prepare impartial assessment reports and recommendations.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for people with strong practical experience in occupational health and safety, ideally gained in environments where OH&S risks, controls and management systems are part of day-to-day operations. You should have a sound working knowledge of ISO 45001:2018 and understand how OH&S management systems are applied in practice. Experience in auditing, certification, assurance or conformity assessment would be particularly relevant. You should also understand the statutory and regulatory framework relevant to your sector experience, including how legal requirements and operational risks are managed through effective OH&S controls. Strong report writing skills and the ability to make objective, evidence-based judgements are essential. A NEBOSH Diploma, or equivalent qualification, is required. IOSH membership, such as TechIOSH, GradIOSH or CMIOSH, is desirable but not essential.
Typical Backgrounds
- Health and Safety Managers or EHS Leaders
- ISO 45001 Auditors or Certification Auditors
- Engineering, construction, manufacturing or operational leaders with OH&S responsibility
- Technical specialists with experience of SSIP or sector-specific OH&S schemes
Conflict of Interest
All applicants are required to submit a conflict-of-interest declaration during the selection and onboarding process. This helps ensure the impartiality, independence and integrity of UKAS accreditation activities. Any actual, potential or perceived conflicts will be evaluated and managed in accordance with UKAS guidelines before assessment activities are scheduled.
