Job Description

As an EC&I Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering assigned project tasks, conducting technical research, and producing high-quality engineering reports. You will interpret design requirements, apply engineering principles, and demonstrate initiative by developing innovative and practical solutions.

You will utilise your technical knowledge to develop and interpret engineering drawings, data, and documentation in support of the design, installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, fault diagnosis, overhaul, and decommissioning of electrical and data systems within engineering infrastructure projects.

Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of engineering systems, including:

  • Low Voltage (LV) Distribution Systems
  • Extra Low Voltage (ELV) Systems
  • Control and Automation Systems
  • Instrumentation and Monitoring Systems
  • Sensors and Transmitters
  • Auxiliary Electrical Systems

The role requires proficiency in the use of both standard and specialist electrical equipment, machinery, hand tools, measuring instruments, diagnostic equipment, and computer-aided design (CAD) software. You will ensure that all components and assemblies are designed and delivered in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and quality requirements.

You will be detail-oriented, adaptable, and collaborative, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and engage confidently with engineers from a variety of technical specialisms.

Duties will include:

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on Electrical, Control, and Instrumentation (EC&I) systems to support the wider design team.
  • Develop, review, and interpret electrical and instrumentation design documentation, including:
    • Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
    • Block Cable Diagrams
    • Instrument Loop Diagrams
    • Hook-Up Drawings
    • Equipment Layouts
    • General Arrangement (GA) Drawings
  • Perform electrical design calculations and produce supporting documentation, including cable sizing and fault level calculations using AMTECH ProDesign and lighting calculations using DIALux.
  • Carry out instrumentation design calculations and system assessments.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive Electrical and Instrumentation design dossiers and technical documentation packages.
  • Review project requirements and deliver assigned engineering tasks in accordance with project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Undertake technical research, site surveys, and engineering assessments to support project development and delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with company procedures, industry regulations, and health, safety, and environmental requirements.
  • Participate in HAZOP studies, design reviews, risk assessments, and other process safety activities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, design quality assurance, and project risk management processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • IET BS 7671 18th Edition qualification.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a relevant engineering or design role.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Understanding of engineering research methods and technical report writing.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards, regulations, and best practices, including risk management principles and quality management systems (ISO 9001).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience using engineering design and CAD software, including AutoCAD, MicroStation, EPLAN, AMTECH ProDesign, and DIALux.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Professional, self-motivated, and committed to continuous learning and development.
  • Full UK driving licence (where required).
  • Professionally registered as Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng), or actively working towards registration.
